There’s no doubt that bloated government bureaucracies need pruning—like an overgrown forest choking off light and life beneath. Universities, too, have often lost their way, nurturing ideological extremes and tolerating open defiance of civil norms. Harvard and other elite institutions have enabled left-wing extremism, including support for Hamas and a disturbing rise in antisemitism. Free speech has suffered, and accountability has waned. These institutions must be held to U.S. laws and ethical standards.

But President Trump’s response—slashing research funding and targeting international students—isn’t pruning. It’s setting fire to the entire forest. And in the process, he’s threatening the very roots of America’s scientific leadership, economic prosperity, and global influence.

The global competitiveness of the United States has always depended on its universities—on their openness to talent and their commitment to research. From the microchip to the biotech revolution, many of the innovations that defined modern America were born in academic labs. They were powered by brilliant minds drawn from around the world and sustained by public funding. The internet (UCLA), Google’s search algorithm (Stanford), GPS (MIT), and mRNA vaccines (UPenn) all originated in U.S. universities. So did breakthroughs in clean energy, artificial intelligence, and cancer treatments—like CRISPR gene-editing and immunotherapies. Now, due to Trump’s actions, even life-saving cancer research is being halted midstream as federal grants are frozen and labs shut down.

Harvard University, long considered a beacon for international scholars, has had its authority to enroll foreign students revoked. Over $2.7 billion in federal research funding has been frozen. MIT has announced cuts to graduate admissions and layoffs of research staff. The University of California system is engaged in lawsuits to stop NIH grant reductions. All of this will significantly harm American scientific progress.

The casualties are not just academic departments—they include cancer trials, climate research, vaccine development, and national security projects in quantum computing and cybersecurity. Hundreds of labs across the country are reporting frozen budgets, canceled contracts, and the departure of top talent. Institutions like Johns Hopkins, Stanford, and the University of Michigan have warned that essential federally funded research in public health, advanced manufacturing, and clean energy is now at risk.

Although a federal judge has temporarily blocked the administration’s attempt to strip Harvard of its authority to enroll international students, the damage is already done. The legal reprieve doesn’t undo the chilling effect on global talent or the disruption to research programs already underway. The uncertainty alone has weakened America’s standing as the global destination for cutting-edge innovation.

This decline is especially tragic given the historic accomplishments of American research institutions. Public investments in university science have given us not just medical miracles and digital revolutions, but entire industries. NIH and NSF funding helped spawn biotech, clean-tech, and nanotech. DARPA grants gave us GPS and the early internet. These are the roots of the U.S. innovation economy. Undermining them is like ripping out the foundation of a skyscraper mid-construction.

And it’s not just the research funding that’s under attack—it’s the people who bring that research to life. For decades, the United States enjoyed the greatest free lunch in the history of education and entrepreneurship: the smartest students from India, China, and across the globe came to study here. They didn’t just learn. They stayed. They built companies. They created jobs.

Immigrants have played a starring role in nearly every American success story of the past half-century. More than half of Silicon Valley’s startups were founded by immigrants. A 2022 report from the National Foundation for American Policy found that 55% of America’s unicorn startups—those valued at over $1 billion—were started by immigrants. That list includes companies like Tesla, Google, Intel, PayPal, Moderna, and Zoom.

In science and medicine, the pattern is the same. Foreign-born researchers are disproportionately represented among Nobel Prize winners in the U.S., among faculty at leading universities, and among the inventors behind patents filed by top American institutions. More than 75% of patents from U.S. research universities list at least one foreign-born inventor.

And yet, the Trump administration has gone out of its way to block these very contributors. During the pandemic, it attempted to revoke the visas of international students attending online classes. Visa processing delays have become routine. Highly skilled immigrants, including PhDs and postdocs, now face long waits, opaque rules, and rising uncertainty. The result? A slow-moving brain drain has become a stampede. Talented researchers are heading to Europe, Canada, and Australia instead.

I warned of this scenario in my book The Immigrant Exodus more than a decade ago. At the time, it was a cautionary tale. Today, it’s an unfolding reality. We are witnessing a deliberate dismantling of the U.S. innovation ecosystem—one visa and one research grant at a time.

To be clear, not all criticism of universities is unwarranted. There is bloat. There is waste. And some institutions have failed to uphold the principles of academic neutrality. But that doesn’t justify blind destruction. There’s a difference between pruning a tree and torching the orchard.

Even from a purely economic perspective, these policies are indefensible. International students alone contribute over $40 billion annually to the U.S. economy. They pay full tuition. They rent housing. They spend in their local communities. Many go on to become entrepreneurs, taxpayers, and job creators. Meanwhile, research funding supports hundreds of thousands of jobs in every state. It powers startups, anchors regional economies, and drives the industries of tomorrow. Weakening that foundation doesn’t just harm universities—it weakens America.

The cruel irony is that these policies will hurt the very people Trump claims to defend: working Americans. When universities lose research grants, they cut faculty and staff. When international students go elsewhere, local businesses—from coffee shops to apartment complexes—take the hit. When breakthroughs are delayed or lost, America loses its competitive edge—and the jobs and industries that follow.

China doesn’t need to outspend America to win the innovation race. It only needs to watch the United States unravel its own lead. And that’s exactly what’s happening.

Still, I haven’t lost hope.

The United States has stumbled before—and corrected course. The backlash to these policies is growing. Universities are fighting back. Business leaders are speaking out. Courts are stepping in. My hope is that this is just another Trumpian overreach—damaging, yes, but ultimately reversible.

America’s strength has always come from its openness: to new people, to bold ideas, and to investment in the future. It was immigrants and research grants that built the internet, cured disease, and launched the industries that power our economy today. If we remember that—and act on it—this won’t be the beginning of America’s decline, but a painful detour on the road to renewal.

Men de hadde ikke sett for seg en slik all-out krig hvor universitetenes konstitusjonelle rettigheter krenkes på et massiv skala, istedenfor å regulere hadde Trump hentet hans immigrasjonshat inn i bildet og deretter skapt en politikk som ikke bare krenke studentenes rettigheter, men også forsøkt å regulere undervisningsmateriale - etc. ødelegge den akademiske friheten.

Dessuten har Trumps rasistiske politikk mot DEI og vitenskap knyttet til helse, sosialforskning og miljøvern fulgt til enorme skader, nå er studentene enten på vei hjem (EU og spesielt NORGE må gir mer penger til forskning og fag mye mer enn før, samt få et stopp for "Bullshit"-arbeidsorientering nå som vi trenger fagpersoner) eller dratt annetsteds. 

Trump truer med å ødelegge USA ved å angripe universitetene. Det kommer nå flere og flere patenter, offentliggjøringer og vitenskapelige oppdagelser fra utenfor USA fremfor fra selve USA, kineserne har tatt en meget klar ledelse globalt sett nå som de kinesiske universitetene får langt mer støtte enn før slik at disse er snart i Harvard-nivå. EU hadde altfor lenge latt være å investere i utdanning og forskning, men i Frankrike har Macron gått sterkt inn for en endring - som andre land nå følge etter, ikke minst fordi de hadde aldri kunne holde på sine studenter og forskere som tok fordel av fribevegelsesrett mellom EU og USA - det amerikanske markedet var altfor lukrativt. Nå er denne retten i ferd med å bli borte, slik at folk må bli værende i deres hjemlandene. 

Det er derfor veldig rart at folk flest ikke gjort noe så langt. USAs styrke ligger i dens natur som en immigrasjonsnasjon som hadde kunne tiltrekke seg de smarte fra hele verden i et århundre helt siden slutten på 1.vk, som ikke bare var slutten på den europeiske sivilisasjonens hegemoni, det var også slutten på den europeiske akademiske revolusjonen som startet i begynnelsen på 1800-tallet først i Storbritannia, deretter resten av Europa. Revolusjonen overføres til USA fordi militarisering og overregulering som følge av nasjonalistisk vekking svekket de toneangivende universitetene i Europa til fordel for de amerikanske som var helt reguleringsfrie med omfattende privat og statlig støtte. 

Nå er revolusjonen på vei ut av USA - og denne er ikke av ny dato, siden 2010 da republikanerne begynte å sabotere forfatningen hadde det vært sett en gradvis reversering til fordel for land som Kina, Tyrkia og Sør-Korea - ikke-vestlige land hadde etter hvert tilrettelagt fagsentriske miljø omkring utdanning, støtte og forskning - det er mange ganger flere fagpersoner med ekspertise på skipsbygging enn i hele Skandinavia i Tyrkia for eksempel - staffpinnen som USA hadde siden 1920-tallet, overføres til Ikke-Vesten. Trumps politikk og republikanernes antivitenskapelige holdninger gjør det mye verre. 

Dessverre virker det som at de europeiske politikere våkne for sent, og det er kommet meldinger om at amerikanere som vil utvandre til europeiske land, kan støte på stengte dør pga. akutt stupiditet. Akkurat når vi trenger mange flere fagutdannede enn før, i de siste tretti år hadde det vært en meget sterk nedgang i studenter som valgt fag til fordel for "drop-outs" og folk som søke "bullshit"-arbeid som er svært lite produktivt for samfunn. Det blir flere og flere utlendinger fra ikke-Vesten som blir viktig innenfor forskning også her i Europa, men disse utgjør et lite fåtall blant disse som går til ikke-vestlige land som Kina og India. Selv i Emiratene, Qatar og Saudi-Arabia som Iran meldes det om et svimlende stort antall uteksaminerte fagutdannede i dag. 

I midten av dette tappe Trump ut vannet, slik at demningen nå tømmes.

Neal deGrasse Tyson makes a very relevant point this week:

“If a foreign adversary snuck into our Federal budget and cut science research and education the way we’re cutting it ourselves — strategically undermining America’s long-term health, wealth, and security — we would likely consider it an act of war.”

Donald Trump’s administration just said you can’t get the Covid vaccine unless you’re over 65 or sick, setting up America for more death and disease. As Noah Berlatsky notes in his great Substack newsletter:

“This is the latest effort by Trump to try to kick start a major US pandemic and degrade the health and welfare of the country. Trump as also rolled back food testing, including testing for bacteria in infant formula. He’s made major cuts at the FAA, leading to fears for airline safety—and a number of dramatic airline safety failures already may be related to the destruction of capacity. Cuts at the NOAA may diminish the ability to warn about dangerous weather events. The Republican proposals for Medicaid cuts are likely to lead to tens of thousands of deaths. And of course Trump’s senseless tariffs are increasing inflation, destroying jobs, and could still easily end us in a recession.“

But why? What the hell is going on here?

Almost two-thirds of us Americans can’t afford the basic necessities of life, according to a new report from the Ludwig Institute for Shared Economic Prosperity (LISEP) reported by CBS News. They point out that if unemployment numbers included the underemployed and those stuck in “poverty-wage jobs,” it would be around 24%, not the 4.2% recently reported, leading to an acknowledgement of a widespread misery that’s largely hidden by the way we currently calculate unemployment.

Income for the bottom 60% of Americans, for example, actually declined by 4% in the years 2001 to 2023 while costs — particularly for healthcare, housing, food, and education (college tuition, for example, is up 122% since 2001) — have exploded.

Before the pandemic, half of all homes on the market were affordable to a family earning $75,000 a year; today it’s only one out of five houses that such a family could afford to purchase.

The initial result of this post-Reagan Revolution economy was to kneecap the middle class and working class; now Republicans are using the same strategy they employed to destroy our middle class to dismantle our nation’s government and its core functions to leave us vulnerable to the predation of foreign nations, vulture capitalists, and the morbidly rich.

And nobody’s sure why.

The history of how we got here is shocking. And the place it’s taking us — gutting government functions while handing our role in the world over to China and Russia — is downright scandalous

At first, it was simply a political strategy to claim the mantle of Santa Claus from the Democrats by “gifting” America with tax breaks. Then it became a program to force Dems to kill off their own social programs by driving up the national debt. And now it’s being used to disassemble the American government itself, abandoning what’s left of the middle class while handing America’s dominant role in the world to China and Russia.

You could call it treason, except that it’s become so normalized and institutionalized that most Americans wouldn’t even understand the reason for the label.

Republican policy weirdness that brought us to this moment began around the national debt in 1981.

The U.S. was significantly in debt following our Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World War I, and World War II. Following the philosophy that a large national debt should only exist during a time of national emergency, in each case, after the end of each war, we began a serious effort to pay down that debt.

Andrew Jackson finished paying off the entire debt from the Revolutionary War in the 1830s. We’d largely paid off the debt from the Civil War by the end of the 19th century, and, as the Treasury Department notes on its debt history site, our “government ended the century with its finances in very good order.”

We paid the national debt for WWI down to a mere $17 billion by the time the Republican Great Depression hit, but between the cost of the New Deal and World War II, we entered the post-WWII era in 1946 with a debt equal to 106% of GDP, a ratio we hit again in 2015.

Republicans and Democrats quickly united around the idea of paying off our national debt in the post-war years, driving it down to a mere $800 billion ($0.8 trillion) between 1945 and 1981 when Reagan came into office.

And then, following Jude Wanniski’s “Two Santas” plan, the GOP embarked on an experiment that had never been intentionally tried in the U.S. or any other developed country in world history: drive up the national debt as high as possible with massive tax breaks for the very richest among us.

Reagan did this for two reasons:

— First, deficit spending with trillions in borrowed money (he ran the debt up to $2.4 trillion in a mere 8 years) stimulates the economy, so people thought Reagan had produced good times. (Give me a $2 trillion credit card, and I’ll show you what it looks like to live large, too!)

— Second, the rising debt gave Republicans the perfect excuse to follow Wanniski’s advice to force the Democrats to “shoot their Santa [of programs like Social Security and Medicaid] in the face.” Whenever a Republican is in the White House, Wanniski argued, Republicans should run up the debt as hard and fast as possible, so when a Democrat is in the White House they can squeal about “the debt our children will inherit! Oh, the humanity!”

The GOP has stuck to this strategy for 44 years now, running up $36 trillion in debt (and our entire Gross Domestic Product was a mere $27.7 trillion last year) and now, finally, we’ve reached the point where this unsustainable debt is not only costing us a trillion dollars a year in debt service (interest payments) but has led to a downgrade of our nation’s credit score.

At first, the main effect of the Two Santas strategy was merely to make the morbidly rich among us fabulously richer, while extracting much of that wealth from the homes, retirement plans, and savings of the middle class. It was, quite simply, a planned and successful transfer of roughly $50 trillion into the money bins of the rich, almost all of it coming out of the hides and lives of the rest of us.

When Reagan came into office in 1981, about two-thirds of Americans were solidly middle class with a single paycheck being able to buy a home, a car, raise a family, put the kids through school, and provide for a decent retirement.

Today, that same standard of living requires a bit more than two full-time jobs, and only about 47% of us are in the middle class (with two wage earners instead of just one in 1981).

“‘The middle class has been declining — we just haven't recognized it fully,’ LISEP Chairman Gene Ludwig told CBS MoneyWatch. ‘It’s really dangerous because it’s the kind of thing that leads to social unrest, and it’s not fair. The American dream is not that it’s given to you — it’s that if you work hard, you have a chance to get ahead and achieve the things in life that you want to achieve. It’s not living in a tent, not having to steal.”

But now Trump, Musk, Vance, and congressional Republicans — having first crushed the American middle class — are doing everything they can to destroy America’s preeminent position in the world along with our social safety net.

— Instead of investing in education and science, they’re making it harder for students to get an education.

— Instead of promoting democracy around the world, they’re embracing murderous dictators while broadcasting rightwing neofascist propaganda on Voice of America.

— Instead of lifting up Americans by helping our veterans and providing food, healthcare, and shelter to the poor and disabled, they’re gutting the VA and the social safety net.

As a result, today nearly half of American children (45% or 34 million kids) rely on food and medical programs that are now targeted by “Christian” Mike Johnson’s House Republicans in their Big Brutal Bill providing trillions in tax breaks to billionaires. The proposed cuts to SNAP (food stamps) and Medicaid, for example, would be the largest in the history of the U.S.

Reagan’s Two Santas strategy has done serious harm to America, collapsing the economic futures of two entire generations.

And now they’re going after our government itself.

But, why? Nobody’s sure.

— Did Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, or both tell Trump and/or Elon Musk to destroy America?

— Are our country’s billionaires so psychopathically greedy that they’re willing to sell us all out for another few billion dollars in tax breaks?

— Do Trump’s allies believe that if they can impoverish Americans we’ll be more willing to go along with their authoritarian agenda the way Germans did after being immiserated by the Republican Great Depression of the 1930s?

— Are they following the “Dark Enlightenment” philosophers of Silicon Valley who argue that democracy is outdated and “we need to get over our dictator phobia” and let the tech giants run the country?

Nobody knows for sure. Nobody can really explain it.

Republicans are aren’t even pretending anymore; they’re not even bothering to proclaim BS like “trickle down” or the “need to support the job creators.“

Most distressing, there’s virtually no discussion of any of this in the mainstream press.

— The Two Santas strategy is easily documented, but never mentioned.

— The explosion of our national debt is all over economists’ websites, but when the American media mentions it, it’s always in the context of Democrats needing to “reduce spending” rather than the fact that virtually 100% of our debt today was put there exclusively by Reagan, Bush, and Trump tax cuts and Bush’s two illegal wars.

— Nobody, it seems, is speculating about why Trump and Musk would want to kill off USAID or kneecap the FAA and the National Weather Service. Qui bono (who benefits?) other than Putin and Xi? The savings are a drop in the billionaire’s bucket; there must be a larger agenda than just funding tax cuts for billionaires.

— And, they’re now holding their votes in the middle of the night; I think we all know what they are hiding and the credulous press is letting pass.

I don’t know why Republicans have been so enthusiastic about first destroying the American middle class and now our government itself, but the consequences have driven the explosion of rightwing anger, racism, and misogyny that’s been sweeping the nation since Trump’s appearance on the scene in 2015.

And now they’re threatening our position in the world, as well as possibly leading us all into a third world war.

Det republikanske partiet må oppløses, det finnes i virkeligheten ikke "moderate" republikanere som gang på gang svikte deres velgerne, som gang på gang bare stemt blindt fordi de får ikke lov til å stemme på disse man vil ha pga. nomineringsvalg, som bli ettpartivalg overført til aktivistiske ekstremistbevegelser som tar fordel av gerrymandering - tillatt av Roberts - for å skape politisk ensidighet og dermed umuliggjør intern opposisjon som politisk valgfrihet. Det beste alle republikanere som er patriotisk, skulle gjøre - er å brenne sine partibøker og trekke seg ut av partiet, før de risikere å bli dødsfiender for et rasende folk som kan i slutten velge kommunismen i fremtiden. 

Republikanerpartiet er død. Et nytt og folkefiendtlig parti har oppstått, et fascistisk parti som er helt besatt av fortidens apartheid, raserenhet og USAs fortreffenhet - de er ekstremnasjonalistisk.

Oppslutningen omkring demokratene er sterkt sviktende, på det beste er det bare 20 %, og det registreres at flere velgergrupper ser ut til å ha fått et anslag av kognitiv svik som sett med mange fargede som i stigende grad er positivt mot Trump tross hans rasistiske politikk. Da "Big, Beautiful Bill"-planen ble vedtatt, kunne denne ha blitt stoppet - det var bare 215 mot 214 - men demokraten Gerry Connolly hadde dødt uken før pga. kreft. Istedenfor å trekke seg og tillate hastevalg hadde Connolly valgt å bli værende. I løpet av bare et halvt år har tre - TRE - demokratiske kongressmedlemmer dødt, alle av alderdom og sykdom - og kreftnyheten omkring Biden med en kreftsykdom som er 100 % dødelig (innenfor bare få år) - skapt et inntrykk av et gammelmannsvelde hvor man foretrakk å føres ut på båre fremfor å gi fra seg embetsposisjon. Last year, when Jamie Raskin bumped New York Democrat Jerry Nadler to become the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez threw her hat in the ring to replace him. Ocasio-Cortez had occasionally led House Democrats when Raskin underwent treatment for cancer.

She had some of the toughest questions for witnesses in the Oversight Committee and is known to have one of the most professional staffs on Capitol Hill.

But she was passed over for Connolly largely because it was “his turn.” Connolly had been consistently leapfrogged to lead the committee, but Democrats have long adhered to the idea that Democrats earn chairmanships based on whose “turn” it is.

This creates a bottleneck where members can wait for years on end to earn leadership spots, only to be advanced in age when they obtain these coveted positions, thereby repeating the cycle.

This was also compounded by the fact that earlier this year, two other House Democrats died. Raúl Grijalva of Arizona died of cancer, while Sylvester Turner of Texas died the day after Trump’s joint address to Congress.

Grijalva, who had undergone cancer treatment and missed most votes last year, was among those who told Biden he should step aside. Turner, who was 70 and had survived cancer, won his seat in Congress after Sheila Jackson Lee died in office last year.

Had all three Democrats not run for office last year or had younger Democrats run for their seats, the bill likely would have been unsuccessful.

En Aftenpost-reportasje i dagens avis var om "the MAGA granny" som oppriktig angret og nektet å ta imot Trumps benådning for hennes rolle under 6. januar, som hun mente var "den verste dagen i hennes liv". Hun forklart at hun kom til sans og samling fordi hun var anstendig behandlet av politimennene og fikk adgang på informasjon under fengselsoppholdet - som rystet henne ut av zombietilstanden. Hun anklager Fox News og sosiale medier for at hun hadde blitt hjernevasket. Vi vet fra annetsteds at så mye som 30 % av det amerikanske folket har ikke tilgang på legale mediekanaler eller det som kalles gammelmedier, og at nesten hele befolkningen utsettes for Trumps propagandamaskineriet gjennom reguleringsfri Internett med ukontrollert nyhetsspredning med falske nyhetskanaler, blogger, forumer og sosiale medier.

Det er i virkeligheten bare 12,8 mill. arbeidsplasser avdelt til ferdigvareproduksjon i hele USA, på sitt høyeste var det på rundt 20 mill. i 1979 - Wells Fargo gjort det klart at dette er en umulighet, for det simpelt er ikke nok blåsnipparbeidere i hele USA for en retur til 1979-nivået, det vil koste 2,9 trillion dollar - og det er rett og slett altfor få kvalifiserte studenter med fageksamen hver år fra universitetene og collegene. Det amerikanske markedet er for lengst orientert mot tjeneste fremfor vareproduksjon, og det er simpelt for få som vil ha fabrikkarbeid som uansett skal automatiseres. Som da innbar at man må ha høykvalitetspersonell - som i seg selv er langt fra lett å få tak på.

I hele TI ÅR siden jeg satt meg inn i studier av Trump og deretter betraktet hans meritter - har jeg sagt at han ikke er en forretningsmann i det hele tatt. Nå tvinge dette seg fram. 

We’ve already established that President Trump is a lousy negotiator. But now, out of his own thumbs, we’ve got the proof that he’s got no business chops, either. 

After Walmart announced that it would soon be raising retail prices because of Trump’s tariffs, Trump posted this on Truth Social. “Walmart should STOP trying to blame Tariffs as the reason for raising prices throughout the chain. Walmart made BILLIONS OF DOLLARS  last year, far more than expected. Between Walmart and China they should, as is said, ‘EAT THE TARIFFS,’ and not charge valued customers ANYTHING. I’ll be watching, and so will your customers!!!” 

It’s rare, even with Trump, to find so much nonsense packed into a single paragraph. But somehow he’s managed it. 

For one thing, serious business people don’t whine. They make the best decision they can and then either live with the consequences or change their approach. What they don’t do is throw a tantrum because their customers and competitors are not cooperating with their plans. 

Second, Walmart has a duty to its shareholders, not to Trump’s ego or his political fortunes. Walmart should not be “eating tariffs” to make the president happy, and it is cringe-worthy that Trump has suggested it should. 

Trump’s suggestion is proof positive that he doesn’t know the first thing about Walmart’s business or how it works. Walmart is a high-volume, low-margin retailer. In other words, it makes a tiny profit on each sale but it sells a huge amount. Walmart’s profit margin is just 2.75 percent. So yes, Walmart made almost $19 billion over the last year, but it had to wrack up almost $700 billion in sales to do it. 

It’s hard to tell exactly, since Walmart doesn’t like to talk about it, but one analyst estimates that about 75 percent of Walmart’s non-grocery inventory is imported, and around 60 percent of that is imported from China. Since selling imported goods is such a large part of its business, Walmart has no choice but to pass along tariffs — especially 30 percent tariffs — to its customers. The alternative is bankruptcy.

Dette understrekes av en ny bok som er så nytt, at den stanset for bare få uker siden - "Amerikansk Kollaps - Fra supermakt til Trumpstat" av Halvor Elvik. Det er en meget informativ bok fordelt i hundrevis av anekdoter slik at man ikke trengte å lese fra begynnelse til ende. Elvik gjort det klart, utvilsomt inspirert av den epokevekkende boken "Hvit Makt" som avslørt den amerikanske rasefaktoren - at Trump kom til makten på ryggen av rasister og tilhengere av Hvitnasjonalisme ikke en, men tre ganger i 2016, 2020 og 2024. Dessuten er Trumps makt basert på det republikanske ønsket om et hvitt minoritetsstyre i en de facto ettpartistat - dvs. en gjenskapelse av det sørafrikanske apartheidsstyret og det amerikanske rasesamfunnet fra 1880-1964 perioden. Det er hvordan en svindler som nå bryte amerikansk lov hele tiden, utøve tyranni og deretter demonstrere åpenlys korrupsjon til allmenn sjokk for alle oppstående kunne ta all makt - det var Obama som gjort dette mulig. (de som vil påpeke inderne og latins, burde huske at disse av nordindisk-hinduistisk aner i likhet med disse av hispanisk-amerikanske aner betrakte seg selv som hvite). 

Det er rasefaktoren som gjør at republikanerne og de hvite velgerne så langt nektet å ta affære mot Trump selv om han ruinere disses verden, det er voksende frykt for at et åttende konkurs vil skje - som vil omfatte hele USA, for mange er det viktigere å opprettholde rasehierarkiet basert på en samfunnsorden hvor alle andre er underordnet, selv om dette har blitt utvidet til også å omfatte de fattige hvite som kastes ut pga. sosialøkonomiske skillelinjer. Da McCain roste Obama etter å ha erkjent nederlaget i november 2008, valgt publikum å bue til manges sjokk. Siden har det kommet fram at store deler av den hvite befolkningen hadde kommet ut i en mental krisestemning - flesteparten som sagt av meg her i tråden klarer ikke å gjenkjenne deres underliggende rasistiske holdninger - fordi Obama var valgt, og deretter gjenvalgt. I året 2015 var republikanerne i ferd med å falle fra hverandre - som av utsiden var helt misforstått. For det var i virkeligheten rasistisk frustrasjon som tok overhånd, slik at Trump som erklært seg som en Hvit Mann kunne komme inn. 

Dette har vært misforstått. Aktuelt kan man si at USA er det første offeret for "Toleranse for Intoleranse", som her i Europa hentes fram omkring integreringsfiendtlige innvandrere, spesielt av muslimsk tro utsatt for statsfiendtlig islamisme - som i denne omgangen er mer snakk om rasefaktoren, da man tolerere åpenlyse rasistiske holdninger som ties i hjel eller kamufleres under en utstrakt tro om at toleransestyrken er sterk. I dag vet vi bedre både her i Europa hvor innvandringssaken er en trussel mot demokrati, og i USA hvor demokrati er under stor fare om å gå under til fordel for ekstreme fordumsfylte folk. 

Fram til 1933 var Hitler ofte latterliggjort som en liten, pompøs og hyklersk mann som oppførte seg som en klovn i ekstreme hysteriske anfall i møte med hans tilhørere. Hitler som var klart over medienes bilde av ham den gang, sa en viktig setning som må hentes fram, da det kom etter han hadde triumfert og tatt makten gjennom konservative tullinger som trodde de kunne kontrollere ham: (akkurat som med alle rikfolk og politikere som slå følge med Trump)

It’s a provocative idea: that empathy — that is, putting yourself in another person’s proverbial shoes, and feeling what they feel — is a sin. 

The Bible contains repeated invocations from Jesus to show deep empathy and compassion for others, including complete strangers. He’s very clear on this point. Moreover, Christianity is built around a fundamental act of empathy so radical — Jesus dying for our sins — that it’s difficult to spin as harmful. 

Yet as stunning as it may sound, “empathy is a sin” is a claim that’s been growing in recent years across the Christian right. It was first articulated six years ago by controversial pastor and theologian Joe Rigney, now author of the recently published book, The Sin of Empathy, which has drawn plenty of debate among religious commentators. 

In this construction, empathy is a cudgel that progressives and liberals use to berate and/or guilt-trip Christians into showing empathy to the “wrong” people. 

Had it stayed within the realm of far-right evangelicals, we likely wouldn’t be discussing this strange view of empathy at all. Yet we are living in an age when the Christian right has gained unprecedented power, both sociocultural and political. The increasing overlap between conservative culture and right-leaning tech spaces means that many disparate public figures are all drinking from the same well of ideas — and so a broader, secular version of the belief that empathy is a tool of manipulation has bubbled into the mainstream through influential figures like Elon Musk.

What “empathy is a sin” actually means

The proposition that too much empathy is a bad thing is far from an idea that belongs to the right. On Reddit, which tends to be relatively left-wing, one popular mantra is that you can’t set yourself on fire to keep someone else warm. That is, too much empathy for someone else can erode your own sense of self, leaving you codependent or open to emotional abuse and manipulation. 

That’s a pretty standard part of most relationship and self-help advice — even from some Christian advice authors. But in recent months, the idea that empathy is inherently destructive has not only become a major source of debate among Christians, it’s escaped containment and barreled into the mainstream by way of major media outlets, political figures, and influencers.

The conversation began with an incendiary 2019 essay by Rigney, then a longtime teacher and pastor at a Baptist seminary, in which he introduced “the enticing sin of empathy” and argued that Satan manipulates people through the intense cultural pressure to feel others’ pain and suffering. 

Rigney’s ideas were met with ideological pushback, with one Christian blogger saying it “may be the most unwise piece of pastoral theology I’ve seen in my lifetime.” As his essay incited national debate, Rigney himself grew more controversial, facing allegations of dismissing women and telling one now-former Black congregant at his Minneapolis church that “it wouldn’t be sinful for him to own me & my family today.” (In an email to Vox, Rigney denied the congregant’s version of events.) Rigney also has a longtime affiliation with Doug Wilson, the leader of the Reformed Christian Christ Church in Moscow, Idaho. (Moskva?!!)

Now well-known for spreading Christian nationalism, and for allegedly fostering a culture of abuse (allegations he has denied), Wilson’s infamy also comes from his co-authored 1996 essay “Southern Slavery: As It Was,” in which he claimed that “Slavery produced in the South a genuine affection between the races that we believe we can say has never existed in any nation before the War or since.” (“My defense of the South does not make me a racist,” Wilson said in 2003.) Rigney appeared on Wilson’s 2019 podcast series Man Rampant to discuss empathy; their conversation quickly devolved into decrying fake rape allegations and musing that victims of police violence might have “deserved to be shot.” 

In an email, Rigney told me that both he and Wilson developed their similar views on empathy from the therapist and Rabbi Edwin Friedman, whose posthumously published 1999 book, A Failure of Nerve: Leadership in the Age of the Quick Fix, has influenced not only family therapy but conservative church leadership and thought. In the book, Friedman argues that American society has devalued the self, leading to an emotional regression and a “low pain threshold.” Alongside this he compares “political correctness” to the Inquisition, and frames a “chronically anxious America” as one that is “organize[d] around its most dysfunctional elements,” in which leaders have difficulty making tough decisions. This correlation of emotional weakness with societal excess paved the way for Rigney to frame empathy itself as a dangerous weapon. 

Despite using the incendiary generalization, “empathy is sin,” Rigney told me that it is not all empathy that is sinful, but specifically “untethered empathy.” He describes this as “empathy that is detached or unmoored from reality, from what is good and right.” (An explanation that begs definitions for “reality,” “good,” and “right.”)

“Just as ‘the sin of anger’ refers to unrighteous or ungoverned anger, so the sin of empathy refers to ungoverned, excessive, and untethered empathy,” Rigney told me. This kind of unrestrained empathy, he writes, is a recipe for cultural mayhem. 

In theory, Rigney argues that one should be “tethered” to God’s will and not to Satan. In practice, what Rigney is typically decrying is any empathy for a liberal perspective or for someone who’s part of a marginalized community. When I asked him for a general reconciliation of his views with the Golden Rule, he sent me a response in which he brought up trans identity in order to label it a “fantasy” that contradicts “God-given biological reality,” while misgendering a hypothetical trans person. 

The demonization of empathy moves into the mainstream

Despite receiving firm pushback from most religious leaders (and indeed most people) who hear about it, Rigney’s argument has been spreading through the Christian right at large. Last year, conservative personality and author Allie Stuckey published Toxic Empathy: How Progressives Exploit Christian Compassion, in which she argues that “toxic empathy is a dangerous guide for our decisions, behavior, and public policy” while condemning queer people and feminists. “Empathy almost needs to be struck from the Christian vocabulary,” Josh McPherson, host of the Christian-centered Stronger Man Nation podcast and an adherent of Wilson and Rigney’s ideas, said in January, in a clip that garnered an outsize amount of attention relative to the podcast episode itself. 

That same month, Vice President JD Vance struck a nerve with a controversial appearance on Fox News in which he seemed to reference both the empathy conversation and the archaic Catholic concept of “ordo amoris,” meaning “the order of love.” As Vance put it, it’s the idea that one’s family should come before anyone else: “You love your family, and then you love your neighbor, and then you love your community, and then you love your fellow citizens in your own country,” he said. “And then after that, you can focus and prioritize the rest of the world.” In a follow-up on X, he posted, “the idea that there isn’t a hierarchy of obligations violates basic common sense.” 

Vance’s statements received backlash from many people, including both the late Pope Francis and then-future Pope Leo XIV — but the controversy just drove the idea further into the mainstream. As part of the odd crossover between far-right religion and online reactionaries, it picked up surprising alliances along the way, including evolutionary biologist turned far-right gadfly Gad Saad. In January, Saad, applying a survival-of-the-fittest approach to our emotions, argued against “suicidal empathy,” which he described as “the inability to implement optimal decisions when our emotional system is tricked into an orgiastic hyperactive form of empathy, deployed on the wrong targets.” (Who are the wrong targets according to Saad? Trans women and immigrants.)

In a February appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast, Elon Musk explicitly referenced Saad but went even further, stating, “The fundamental weakness of Western civilization is empathy — the empathy exploit. They’re exploiting a bug in Western civilization” — the “they” here being the left wing. “I think empathy is good,” Musk added, “but you need to think it through, and not just be programmed like a robot.” 

By March, mainstream media had noticed the conversation. David French had observed the “strange spectacle” of the Christian turn against empathy in a column for the New York Times. In April, a deep-dive in the Guardian followed. That same month, a broad-ranging conversation in the New Yorker with Albert Mohler, president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, led to interviewer Isaac Chotiner pressing him about why empathy is bad. The discussion, of deported Venezuelan immigrants wrongfully suspected of having gang tattoos, led to Mohler saying that “there’s no reason anyone other than a gang member should have that tattoo.” (Among the tattoos wrongly flagged as gang symbols were the words “Mom” and “Dad” on the wrists of one detainee.)

The pro-empathy backlash is fierce  

The connective tissue across all these disparate anti-empathy voices is two-fold, according to Christian scholar Karen Swallow Prior. Prior, an anti-abortion ethicist and former longtime Liberty University professor, singled out the argument’s outsize emphasis on attacking very small, very vulnerable groups — as well as the moment in which it’s all happening.

“The entire discourse around empathy is backlash against those who are questioning the authority of those in power,” she told me, “not coincidentally emerging in a period where we have a rise in recognition of overly controlling and narcissistic leaders, both in and outside the church.” Those people “understand and appreciate empathy the least.”

“Trump made it okay to not be okay with culture,” Peter Bell, co-creator and producer of the Sons of Patriarchy podcast, which explores longstanding allegations of emotional and sexual abuse against Doug Wilson’s Christ Church, told me. (Wilson has denied that the church has a culture of abuse or coercion.) “He made it kind of cool for Christians to be jerks,” Bell said. “He made the unspoken things spoken, the whispered things shouted out loud.”

Prior believes that the argument won’t have a long shelf life because Rigney’s idea is so convoluted. Yet she added that it’s born out of toxic masculinity, in an age where stoicism, traditionally male-coded, is increasingly part of the regular cultural diet of men via figures like Jordan Peterson. That hypermasculinity goes hand in hand with evangelical culture, and with the ideas Rigney borrowed from Friedman about too many emotions being a weakness. In this framing, emotion becomes non-masculine by default — i.e., feminine.

That leads us to the grimmest part of Rigney’s “untethered empathy” claims: the way he explicitly genders it — and demonizes it — as feminine. Throughout his book, he argues that women are more empathetic than men, and that as a result, they are more prone to giving into it as a sin. It’s an inherently misogynistic view that undermines women’s decision-making and leadership abilities.  

Though Rigney pushed back against this characterization in an email to me, arguing that critics have distorted what he views as merely “gendered tendencies and susceptibility to particular temptations,” he also couldn’t help reinforcing it. “[F]emale tendencies, like male tendencies, have particular dangers, temptations, and weaknesses,” he wrote. Women thus should recognize this and “take deliberate, Spirit-wrought action to resist the impulse to become a devouring HR department that wants to run the world.”

As Prior explains, though, Rigney’s just fine with a mythic national human resources department, as long as it supports the status quo. “Everybody’s supposed to have sympathy for the white male,” she said, “but when you show empathy to anyone else, suddenly empathy is a sin.”

What’s heartening is that, whether they realize what kind of dangerous extremism undergirds it, most people aren’t buying Rigney’s “empathy is sin” claim. Across the nation, in response to Rigney’s assertion, the catchphrase, “If empathy is a sin, then sin boldly” has arisen, as heard in pulpits, seen on church marquees, and worn on T-shirts — a reminder that it takes much more than the semantic whims of a few extremists to shake something most people hold in their hearts.

Dette kan ikke tolereres, spredningen må tyder på at noe har gått meget galt med kristenopplæring i store kretser i USA slik at fordommer lett kom gjennom i mye større grad enn tidlig. For de kristne verdiene som er sterkt innbakt i den amerikanske samfunnsdoktrinen, hadde alltid fulgt til likhetskamp, rettighetskamp, toleranse, slavebekjempelse og undertrykkelse av rasistiske som menneskefiendtlige holdninger. Lincoln som befridd slavene i USA, hadde bunnet hans avgjørelse i Jesu Budskap, som en sterkt troende mann som tross meget sterke rasistiske holdninger knyttet til hudfarge ment bestemt at alle er lik for Gud, og at alle elske Gud som så elske dem tilbake. 

Det vil være best om ALLE kirkelederne over hele verden - også i Norge - går sammen og erklære disse "kristne" som aksepterte ideer av Rigney, Wilson, McPherson og Friedman for å være frafalne som ikke kan betraktes som en del av kristendommen. Som frafalne må disse frasi seg den kristne troen som er basert på Jesu Budskap om de skulle fortsette med å holde på den antikristne tesen om "Empati er en Synd". Det vil være fint om den nye paven bann i lys disse kirkemiljøene og forby all kontakt mellom katolikkene og disse frafalne, som er blitt falske kristne. 

Hmmm... det får meg til å huske på spådommene fra det nye testamentet... håper ikke det er tilfeldighet...

Oppslutningen omkring demokratene er sterkt sviktende, på det beste er det bare 20 %, og det registreres at flere velgergrupper ser ut til å ha fått et anslag av kognitiv svik som sett med mange fargede som i stigende grad er positivt mot Trump tross hans rasistiske politikk. Det kunne bare forklare ved at sviktet omkring Biden er langt større enn ventet. Nye bøker som har kommet ut, sammen med en lang rekke artikler om "politisk innavl" i det demokratiske partiet - har fulgt, sammen med katastrofale strategråd fra menn som burde korsfestes for disses ekstraordinær kortsiktighet - til synlig nedgang for et parti som mer og mer bare få proteststemmer fra disse som misliker Trump. Stemmer som ikke vil bli værende for demokratenes skyld.

Da "Big, Beautiful Bill"-planen ble vedtatt, kunne denne ha blitt stoppet - det var bare 215 mot 214 - men demokraten Gerry Connolly hadde dødt uken før pga. kreft. Istedenfor å trekke seg og tillate hastevalg hadde Connolly valgt å bli værende. I løpet av bare et halvt år har tre - TRE - demokratiske kongressmedlemmer dødt, alle av alderdom og sykdom - og kreftnyheten omkring Biden med en kreftsykdom som er 100 % dødelig (innenfor bare få år) - skapt et inntrykk av et gammelmannsvelde hvor man foretrakk å føres ut på båre fremfor å gi fra seg embetsposisjon. Det var en utilgivelig stor tabbe å ikke ha aldergrense for de demokratiske folkevalgte, man hadde tvilsholdt altfor lenge på "Clinton-generasjonen" fra 1980-1995 hele tretti år etterpå!

Last year, when Jamie Raskin bumped New York Democrat Jerry Nadler to become the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez threw her hat in the ring to replace him. Ocasio-Cortez had occasionally led House Democrats when Raskin underwent treatment for cancer.

She had some of the toughest questions for witnesses in the Oversight Committee and is known to have one of the most professional staffs on Capitol Hill.

But she was passed over for Connolly largely because it was “his turn.” Connolly had been consistently leapfrogged to lead the committee, but Democrats have long adhered to the idea that Democrats earn chairmanships based on whose “turn” it is.

This creates a bottleneck where members can wait for years on end to earn leadership spots, only to be advanced in age when they obtain these coveted positions, thereby repeating the cycle.

This was also compounded by the fact that earlier this year, two other House Democrats died. Raúl Grijalva of Arizona died of cancer, while Sylvester Turner of Texas died the day after Trump’s joint address to Congress.

Grijalva, who had undergone cancer treatment and missed most votes last year, was among those who told Biden he should step aside. Turner, who was 70 and had survived cancer, won his seat in Congress after Sheila Jackson Lee died in office last year.

Had all three Democrats not run for office last year or had younger Democrats run for their seats, the bill likely would have been unsuccessful.

Da er det ikke rart at folk rømmer vekk fra demokratene! Et parti som er så kraftig innavlet at det må avlives om de yngre ikke klarer å ta makten. Sanders gjort det klart på hans side - han er likedan altfor gammelt - at partiet hadde hvilt altfor lenge på sine laurbær som regelrett har råtnet til ingenting. Hvis dette er opposisjonen mot Trump og de fascistiske "republikanerne" er det amerikanske folket fortapt - og USAs fremtid er beksvart. For det er ikke bare republikanerne som må vekk. 

Det er topartisystemet som er skyld i råten. I et normalt demokratisk system ville et tredje parti vokse frem. Men nå undertrykker republikanerne og demokratene all opposisjon i trygg forvissning om at topartisystemet alltid berger dem. Men det kommer en tid hvor vannet flommer over demningen og noe nytt tar over. Kanskje blir det i 2028.

Det gjør at de ikke har strategiske evne for mer enn få måneder, så langt strakk ikke deres finansielle ressurser. Alle reservelagrene er tatt slutt, slik at priseksplosjonen er blitt uunngåelig og flere millioner arbeidsgivere og arbeidstakere er i begynnende krisetilstand.

Forretningsstanden hadde prøvd å når Trump, som bare gav seg når trykket bli for stor, men gjort ingenting for å gjenreise stabiliteten tross konstant mas. Mange innser at de ikke når Trump, som mer og mer behandle dem ganske stygt. En skandaløs middag hvor folk måtte bedrive korrupsjon, har fått mange til å innse at det ikke hjelpe å bestikke en maktgal mann som tror han har eneveldig makt, hjulpet av et parti som vendt ryggen mot dem og en høyesterett som nå bryter konstitusjonen hele tiden. Musk har stoppet all pengestøtte til Trump, og det samme har flere tech-milliardører som sett med Apple, de har latt seg brukes, selv om de er altfor treg med å snu helt om, og fant mistro hos sine gamle venner som mente disse hadde blitt forrådt. Wall Street er på grensen av harnisk, 3B-skatteplanen som Trump drive gjennom, fornektes helt og fullstendig. Walmart-saken hadde blitt den siste dråpen i begeret. De ser at Trump er en svindler. 

En svindler som nå drive USA mot en depresjon som vil ramme hele verden. Her må EU/EØS medregnet Norge tar deres forholdsregler i påvent av et kommende økonomisk ragnarok i USA. Statsgjelden kan ikke lenge betjenes nå som utenlandske investorer trekke seg ut, slik at bare stater er tilbake i styrke som Kina og Japan - den er nå på 36.22 trillion dollar. Som et resultat av dyrtid og dårligere råd helt siden Finanskrisen i 2008-09, som Covid i 2020-21 bare forlenge, hadde flere og flere amerikanerne blitt gjeldslaver med å leve på kreditt; det er nå 1.21 trillion dollar. Bilsalget er på vei ned, dette er et tydelig krisetegn for den amerikanske nasjonaløkonomien. 

“In 2025 credit card debt is at all time highs. U.S. debt is at all time highs. Unemployment is rising. 401(k)’s are losing,” he wrote in an X post on April 18. “U.S.A. may be heading for a GREATER DEPRESSION.”

Tilbake er det nå snart bare amerikanske investorer og banker som må bære statsgjelden, for de utenlandske pengene hadde tjent som en viktig balansekraft for å holde gjeldssituasjonen så tolerant som mulig - og bruk av dollar som verdensvaluta hadde gjort en slik absurd gjeld mulig å leve med. Men bruk av dollar er fallende over hele verden. Selv i EU er det nå færre og færre som handler i dollar med andre land. Trumps politikk har gjort dollaren ustabilt.

De rike vil vinne sterkt på dette ifølge Kiyosaki, men han klarer ikke å realisere at dette kan bli en oppfyllelse av en gammel spådom fra 1800-tallet; Marx` tese om den kapitalistiske kollapsen, som vil følge til en kommunistisk revolusjon. Kapitalismen vil i likhet med liberaldemokratismen miste all troverdighet som et resultat for fremtidige generasjoner uansett USAs skjebne. Kiyosaki kan risikere å bli ført til en giljotin i fremtiden av lutfattige folk i en mobb. Når et samfunn utarmes til fordel for noen få på bekostning av alle andre, vil det lede til kollaps og drapsorgier. 

Det er helt utrolig. Fra "Freefall", en online tegneserie, som er svært gammelt - den startet i 1998 - har vi en fortelling om en helt komplett udugelig byråkrat med ekstrem sterk selvopptatthet - mange personligtrekk som er svært lik det som Trump har - som klart å utnytte det trege systemet innenfor et verdensomfattende konsern for å skape et økonomisk ragnarok. Hva denne idioten ikke realisere, var at så snart arbeidsstokken som består av AI roboter, forsvinne vil hele koloniverdenen falle fra hverandre med enorme humanitære konsekvenser for menneskebefolkningen. Disse måtte da forlate kolonien. Heltinnen klarte å stoppe katastrofen i siste liten.
