Gibraltar’s introduction to international football has been a bruising one, with the senior team suffering a string of heavy defeats in Euro 2016 qualifying, but their Under-16 side have brought the island the first footballing success of their new era in bizarre circumstances.

Gibraltar Under-16s clinched a Uefa development tournament by scoring the decisive goal while their opponents Macedonia were engaged in prolonged celebrations of what they thought was an injury-time winner.

With the match deadlocked at 0-0, Macedonia scored what looked likely to be a winner from a corner, sparking jubilant scenes among their players. Lost in the moment, they dashed over to the far touchline to bring their substitutes and staff into the celebrations while Gibraltar’s players regrouped to kick off.

They did so swiftly, while the Macedonia team continued to congratulate each other, enabling Gibraltar to dribble the ball to the edge of the area and slot home as the Macedonia team belatedly dashed back into action. The goal was judged to be legal because all the opposing team were inside their own half when the kick-off was taken.

The 1-1 draw meant Gibraltar won the tournament on goal difference. They all count.
