Why Does America Like Skrillex? The answer to that is pretty simple, America has bad taste. Really bad taste. In everything.

Our top-grossing movies are Transformers, The Smurfs, Squeakquels, and whatever Adam Sandler just shat out. We numb ourselves with TV like Jersey Shore and "Real" Housewives. Mainstream radio is narcissistic, repetitive, and completely derivative garbage. The majority of America has no gauge for actual talent- artists with a sense of nuance or the slightest bit of wit. No- most people just like whatever appeals to the lowest common denominator, the equivalent of something shiny.

I've followed electronic music for 16 years now, and it always happens the same way. Exciting new genres bubble up from the European underground scene thanks to a couple of innovators and some key clubs. Then there's a fertile period where some really great releases come out. Then as soon as the scene gets the tiniest bit of mainstream attention, the wannabes come out of the woodwork. The defining elements of the genre become caricatures. Authenticity vanishes. The mainstream loves it for a year. Then it becomes a cliche.

It happened with trip-hop, drum & bass, progressive house, garage, and now with dubstep. Remember when Britiney and N'Sync enlisted BT as a producer? Remember when N'sync did a couple of "Garage" tracks? Or when Madonna enlisted William Orbit to make Ray of Light (her best album) or worse, when she straight-up stole Vogue-ing from the black transexual house music scene and said "it doesn't matter if you're black or white, if you're a boy or a girl"?. Brit-brit and Rihanna are now releasing tracks with "Dubsteppy" breakdowns. Beiber's next. It's embarrassing. But the American youth eat it up, with no concern or care for actually learning the roots of a genre.

Pop music always exploits and waters down the authenticity of underground music. The story is so old now. All these kids that think they're into dubstep would probably be really confused if they heard Horsepower Productions or Pinch.

Skrillex is popular because he's the equivalent of eating one of everything from the McDonald's Dollar menu. He combines the most derivative elements of some now-passe EDM genres- the synthetic emotional cheese of trance, the agressive drill n bass of IDM, and the "wobble" or dubstep- with absolutely no ear for subtlety, nuance, or dynamics. Skrillex is garbage music for garbage people with no taste.

Må si meg enig i alt dette :)

Quoter Skream:

"OJ: But what are we gonna do, form a united front against Skrillex? Honestly, it’s pathetic, I think, it’s ridiculous. Either listen to it or don’t listen to it. There’s still nights playing the stuff those people want to hear. It’s just bitchiness, it really is. You haven’t got to like his music, you don’t particularly have to like him, but there’s no reason you can’t like what he’s done - he’s smashed it. He’s up for five Grammys. He must be doing something right, you know what I mean? "

Hele intervjuet.

Er digg å kunne sette på Skrillex fra tid til annen. Å bli kalt for "people with no taste" fordi man hører på Skrillex er jo bare latterlig.

Jeg hører stort sett på roligere dubstep. Type sangen jeg posta over. Men av og til er det herligt å kunne sette på noe skikkelig syremusikk.
