The vice-president called for a ceasefire and the immediate release of hostages, in comments that appeared to be the strongest yet by a US leader on Gaza

US vice-president Kamala Harris has bluntly called out Israel for not doing enough to ease a “humanitarian catastrophe” in Gaza as the Biden administration faces increasing pressure to rein in its close ally while it wages war with Hamas militants.

Harris, speaking on Sunday in front of the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, where state troopers beat US civil rights marchers nearly six decades ago, called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and urged Hamas to accept a deal to release hostages in return for a 6-week cessation of hostilities.

“People in Gaza are starving. The conditions are inhumane and our common humanity compels us to act,” Harris said at an event to commemorate the 59th anniversary of Bloody Sunday in Alabama.

“The Israeli government must do more to significantly increase the flow of aid. No excuses,” Harris said.

Harris said Israel must open new border crossings, not impose “unnecessary restrictions” on aid delivery, protect humanitarian personnel and convoys from becoming targets, and work to restore basic services and promote order so that “more food, water and fuel can reach those in need.“

The United States carried out its first airdrop of aid into Gaza on Saturday and Harris is scheduled to meet with Israeli war cabinet member Benny Gantz on Monday at the White House, where she is expected to deliver a similarly direct message.

In her comments, Harris laid out specific ways in which the Israeli government could allow more aid into Gaza.

“They must open new border crossings. They must not impose any unnecessary restrictions on the delivery of aid. They must ensure humanitarian personnel, sites and convoys are not targeted, and they must work to restore basic services and promote order in Gaza, so more food, water and fuel can reach those in need.”

Men altså... hahaha! Takk for en god latter! Håper du får en riktig fin dag! ❤️

Tragisk at denne strategien fungerer.

The first airdrop, which took place in the Rafah area near the Gaza border with Egypt, is where more than one million Palestinian civilians are concentrated.

The airdrop was conducted by U.S. Central Command and the Royal Jordanian Air Force and included U.S. Air Force and RJAF C-130 aircraft.

"U.S. C-130s dropped over 38,000 meals along the coastline of Gaza allowing for civilian access to the critical aid," Central Command said in a statement.

"These airdrops are part of a sustained effort to get more aid into Gaza, including by expanding the flow of aid through land corridors and routes," Central Command added.

The administration was skeptical of such an idea early in the war, but support for it has been growing, the official said, especially as humanitarian groups struggle to get aid to northern Gaza by land due to the security situation and the Israeli restrictions.

War cabinet minister Benny Gantz was set to travel to Washington for talks with senior officials on Sunday, reportedly infuriating Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who did not authorize the trip and was said to chastise him that the country has only one premier.

Among those Gantz will meet are US Vice President Kamala Harris, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, and Republican and Democratic members of US Congress, his office said in a statement Saturday.

Details of the trip, and an allegedly tense phone conversation between Netanyahu and Gantz about the visit, were first reported earlier by the Ynet outlet.

Details of the trip, and an allegedly tense phone conversation between Netanyahu and Gantz about the visit, were first reported earlier by the Ynet outlet.

Netanyahu was said to have been unaware of the visit until Gantz, who leads the National Unity party, called him on Friday to let the prime minister know of his plans and to discuss what messages to convey to the Americans.

A source close to Netanyahu said the premier “made it clear to Minister Gantz that the State of Israel only has one prime minister,” Ynet reported.

The source said the trip was organized without the prime minister’s approval and contrary to government regulations that require “every minister to clear travel in advance with the prime minister, including approval of the travel plan.”

However, the Saturday statement from Gantz’s office confirmed the trip was going ahead and gave details on the upcoming meetings.

“Minister Gantz personally updated the prime minister on his own initiative on Friday of his intention to travel, in order to coordinate the messages to be transmitted in the meetings,” Gantz’s office said.

U.S. Voter Sympathy for Palestinians Grows as Israel War Drags On, WSJ Poll Finds

A plurality of American voters think Israel has gone too far in responding to the October attacks by Hamas, and a growing share believes the U.S. isn’t doing enough to help the Palestinian people, a new Wall Street Journal poll finds.

Some 42% of voters in the survey said Israel has gone too far in pursuing Hamas. A smaller share, 19%, said Israel hasn’t gone far enough, and 24% said Israel’s response to Hamas has been about right.

The poll, conducted Feb. 21-28, also found rising sympathy for the Palestinian people amid Israel’s efforts to destroy Hamas, which have displaced tens of thousands of Gaza residents and caused a humanitarian crisis. The death toll in Gaza has surpassed 30,000 people, Palestinian health authorities say. The figures don’t distinguish between militants and civilians.

The new poll found that 60% of voters disapprove of Biden’s handling of the war, 8 points more than in December, with 31% approving of Biden’s actions. Rather than backing Biden, more than 100,000 people voted “uncommitted” in Michigan’s Democratic presidential primary last week, many in protest of the president’s Israel policy.

Biden administration relations with the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are strained and becoming more so amid severe challenges in delivering food and other aid to Gaza and Israeli plans to invade Rafah, where more than 1 million Palestinians, many of them displaced, now live.

“The longer this goes on, there is a shift toward more sympathy toward the Palestinians and less toward Israel,” said Democratic pollster Michael Bocian, who conducted the Journal poll with Republican Tony Fabrizio.

Sitat

In the new survey, 33% of voters said the U.S. was doing too little to help Palestinians, up from 26% in the Journal’s December poll. About one-quarter of voters said the U.S. was doing too much for Palestinians, with the same share saying the U.S. was doing the right amount.

Some 30% said the U.S. was doing too much to help the Israeli people, compared with 22% who said so in December. The share saying the U.S. was doing too little was unchanged, at 25%.

In a noteworthy development, an age gap in views of Israel seems to be narrowing, with older Democrats matching younger Democrats in their wariness of Israel’s actions.

Some 40% of Democrats under age 40 said the U.S. was doing too much to help the Israeli people, compared with 33% of Democrats ages 40 and older—a 7-point difference. In December, that gap had been 24 points.

Among Democrats ages 40 and older, 71% said Israel had gone too far in responding to Hamas, essentially identical to the share of Democrats under age 40.

Views of the war differ sharply by political party. Some 16% of Republicans say Israel has gone too far in responding to Hamas, compared with the 70% of Democrats.

"The mission team found clear and convincing information that some hostages taken to Gaza have been subjected to various forms of conflict-related sexual violence and has reasonable grounds to believe that such violence may be ongoing," the U.N. report said.

The team said a "fully-fledged investigation" would be required to establish the overall magnitude, scope and specific attribution for the sexual violence.

The U.N. team said it also received information from institutional and civil society sources and direct interviews, about "sexual violence against Palestinian men and women in detention settings, during house raids and at checkpoints" after Oct. 7. The detention centers were in Israel.

The U.N. team said it raised the allegations with the Israeli Ministry of Justice and Military Advocate General, which said no complaints of sexual violence against members of the Israeli Defense Forces had been received.
