The combat system is functionally fine with Oblivion style controls and soft-target locking, but animation speeds are very lax quite a few baddies attack faster than the length of the general pain reaction animation. This leads to being locked on the spot being annihilated by something as simple as a wolf. You have to spam away with your sword and just hope to god they don't get a hit in, because if they do there's a 60% chance your utterly fucked.

Blocking isn't a 100% deflect anymore, a successful block eats a very large chunk of your fatigue so you only have enough for two or three hits before they bust though and do HP damage, but because all your fatigue is gone you attack even slower so you're still ultimately fucked once they get a quick hit in. Yet the AI can quite often block like a champ for half a dozen hits or so. Stuff like town rebellions are nigh impossible, in one instance I was required to assassinate an Orc commander, surrounded by 25 Orcs who will happily two hit me -- quests such as these are required to earn rep for better armours.

Any guy with a long ranged melee weapon such as a spear or halberd (or any Orc for that matter) will completely fuck you. The attack arc is a good 120 degrees in front of them and it cannot be blocked. Getting cleaved knocks you to the ground and eats have your HP. In groups it's a nightmare, if there happens to be a character with a bow or crossbow in the group you're already dead. Unless you split groups MMO style, you'll be sniped in melee and locked into another pain animation trap.

So it very quick boils down to trial and error, and button mashing while reciting prayers in your head when it comes to melee. Very quickly I became an 200 STR warrior that used a crossbow for 75% of my kills, I did this because dying is something you very much want to avoid, not for it's own sake but to avoid a 90 second "quick" load. The stirring violin strings of the loading screen inching along compound the frustration. Yet the game already has a knock out mechanic for duels and important NPC fights, why they don't just extend this to a gamewide mechanic with a cost (ala a 50% reduce on HP until you rest) to stop the gaming being a quick-load-a-thon baffles me. The stream-loading is completely fucking moot, because you're constantly reloading saves.

Now, while the perk leveling system is neat, it doesn't help us with the combat issues. You need to spend LP on everything, even HP, but none of it really helps your survivability in combat in any tangible way. You cannot 'out level' problems, in fact going to Varant and getting a 300 dollar spear does more for your survivability than 20 levels of progression.

Now I've finished every game (and expansion) in the series thus far, I'm not some "oh it's haard" pussy, but Gothic 3 extend the fucking annoying early game existence from the previous games to 90% of the third. I've probably spent a good 70 hours with the game so far, but I'm at this point now where I'll just play for an hour, get pissed and frustrated and quit.

So right now, Gothic 3 is a personal heart break, because the rest of the game (beyond the 90% of it spent in combat) is brilliant. So, I'm waiting around hoping, praying that the final gold master (when it eventually arrives) will flush my troubles away.
