Munich, September 29th 2004 – With the new "70-Series" NEC MultiSync®, NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display is announcing the successor to the established 60-Series models (such as the NEC MultiSync® LCD1760NX) for the Small Medium Business (SMB) and Corporate areas. At 15-, 17-, 19- and 20-inches, the five new models look significantly different from their predecessors. The modern and elegant design of the NEC MultiSync® 70-series is characterised by softer lines and rounded curves and underlines the innovative power of the manufacturer in product design. As well as the visual appearance, the NEC MultiSync® 70-Series LCDs have also undergone further technical development. For instance, the integral Dynamic Visual Mode ensures optimum colour and contrast, especially for colour-intensive applications where true-to-life colour is of prime importance. The NEC MultiSync® 70-Series LC displays also provide the customary outstanding picture quality and innovative functions, which support optimum ergonomic working. The important aspects of low TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) and protection of investment are taken into account with the new models in the most flexible manner possible, thanks to an analogue and digital input. All elements are characterised by an unostentatious and appealing style, right down to the finest detail, to blend harmoniously with the overall picture in every working environment. A very narrow bezel and a forward-tilted, height-adjustable stand lend the NEC MultiSync® 70-Series product family a dynamic appearance with a low overall depth. With the option of a black or white case and silver bezel, there is a model to suit every taste.

The subject of operator controls on the front of the unit is also re-interpreted with a "4-direction key", which directly controls the main parameters such as brightness, colour and contrast. The very narrow bezel also predestines the new monitors, amongst other things, for multiscreen applications, in which several displays can be arranged side-by-side or put together to form a monitor wall. The intelligent design also opens up flexible and versatile installation options.

As well as visual characteristics, the NEC MultiSync® 70-Series product family LCDs also provide technical functionality for high expectations. As well as an analogue VGA connector, the models also have a digital DVI-D input to enable them to be combined as diversely as possible and to provide the greatest possible flexibility and security of investment. Energy-saving features also help to reduce the ongoing operating costs and to keep the TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) low. The integral Dynamic Visual Mode is based on Adaptive Colour Contrast (ACC) and automatically matches colour and contrast to the current screen content and thus ensures an outstanding picture quality at all times. The optional Soundbar 70 (2x2 Watt, for 17- to 20-inch) and the headphone socket provided take care of the appropriate acoustic aspects.

Like all monitors from NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display, the new NEC MultiSync® 70-Series models also meet the highest ergonomic requirements and provide optimum conditions for pleasant working. Thanks to the standard ErgoDesign®, the displays can be both tilted and swivelled and also adjusted in height by 110 mm (15-inch by 75 mm).

The new flat screens of the NEC MultiSync® 70-Series comply with the industrial standards CE, TÜV GS, TÜV Ergonomie, Energy Star and TCO’99, as well as the stringent TCO’03 and ISO 13406-2.

More than 100 per cent consistent reproduction of Adobe® RGB color space

NEC-Mitsubishi Electric Visual Systems develops high-end LED backlight LCD in co-operation with NEC LCD Technologies and Lumileds Lighting

Tokyo/San Jose/Hanover, CeBIT 2004 – At the world’s leading IT trade fair CeBIT 2004 in Hanover, Germany (March 18th to 24th), NEC-Mitsubishi Electric Visual Systems for the first time will present a 21.3-inch LCD with LED backlight technology. Display technology has now caught up with NEC-Mitsubishi Electric Visual Systems equipping the LCD with a color calibration system for perfect color matching ensuring an original performance of brightness and color, based on Super Advanced Super Fine TFT (SA-SFT) panel technology coming from NEC LCD Technologies and LED backlight technology based on the technology having been developed by Lumileds Lighting. The technical challenge of the cooperation has been to develop electronic display technology that complies with the Adobe® RGB color space, and ensuring complete color confidence in all aspects of color processing. The wide gamut 21.3-inch LCD display with LED backlight technology is in an advanced level of development, and current engineering prototypes indicate that the technology will be in small production in Q3 2004 and will be in mass production by early 2005. In the meantime NEC-Mitsubishi Electric Visual Systems will be showcasing this cutting-edge technology to potential customers at CeBIT 2004 and preparing for the much awaited and exciting launch.

Recent technology advances in digital image acquisition, color-processing systems, color printers, and other photographic I/O devices have been little short of remarkable. As well as startling resolutions, the range and depth of color reproduction has also shown significant improvements. A standardized color space promises the benefit of guaranteed color reproduction across all digital platforms and devices from the point of acquisition to the point of delivery, over a wide range of colors. Specialist imaging devices, users of industrial 4-color printing presses and professionals in the DTP and color-proofing industries have demanding requirements, and are looking for consistency across a large color space. Display technology has now caught up with NEC-Mitsubishi Electric Visual Systems offering leading-edge solutions in the key display technologies using the most advanced panel technology from NEC LCD Technologies and the outstanding LED backlight technology from Lumileds Lighting.

The start of the digital chain, i.e. image acquisition, has successfully adopted the Adobe® RGB color space, and printing or hardcopy printing technology has been able to follow suit. The technical challenge for NEC-Mitsubishi Electric Visual Systems has been to develop electronic display technology that complies with the Adobe® RGB color space, and ensures complete color confidence in all aspects of color processing. Adobe® RGB is an extended color space, promoted by Adobe®, and which over time has become a de-facto standard in the professional color processing market.

LCD technology as a display platform is clearly the dominant force in the display market due to the excellent ergonomics, reduced energy needs, space-saving and low cost of ownership benefits. New developments now mean that even LCD monitors can benefit from wide color space applications, which have been historically filled by CRTs. The principle of operation of an LCD is based on placing a bright white-light source (typically a mercury-filled fluorescent tube) behind a series of color matrix LC filters. The LCD filter matrices are digitally switched to adjust the light through-put, and therefore generate an image. The backlight itself has always defined the color temperature and color space available, which has typically been approx 72% of NTSC.

The effort of NEC-Mitsubishi Electric Visual Systems was, to combine its expertise and technological know-how with the latest panel technology from NEC LCD Technologies and the innovative LED backlight technology developed by Lumileds Lighting.

Thanks to this co-operation NEC-Mitsubishi Electric Visual Systems now can bring the optimum solution to the market with having developed a high-end LCD monitor offering the demanding users a large color space, high resolution and a large screen size of 21.3-inch. In addition, NEC-Mitsubishi Electric Visual Systems included a high accuracy color calibration system (internal/external) into the monitor. The new LED backlight display from NEC-Mitsubishi Electric Visual Systems is equipped with a LCD module produced by NEC LCD Technologies is concentrating on the development of high-luminance display modules, high-speed response technologies, ultra-wide viewing angle technologies and adaptive design technologies for display products The panel integrated into the new product from NEC-Mitsubishi Electric Visual Systems is an Super Advanced Super Fine TFT (SA-SFT) with an innovative light guide system optimized for LED light sources and newly designed color filters. Thus, the new 21.3-inch SA-SFT offers large aperture, wide viewing angles and less color shift.

The LED light source of the new 21.3-inch wide color gamut display has been produced by Lumileds Lighting, a fully integrated manufacturer of LED dice, packaged LEDs, and high-brightness LEDs – Luxeon – designed for integration into general lighting products, including also LCD displays. Now, a new backlight consisting of Luxeon Emitters (light emitting diodes) that generate white light (without mercury) with an enhanced color spectrum, allows a wider range of spectral colors to be displayed and the Adobe® RGB color space to be consistently reproduced. On top of this, the Luxeon-based backlight allows for tuning of the white point, which when allied with a feedback sensor ensures the display operates consistently to a pre-defined performance.

But: a LED light source should be used with special color calibration system as color shift compensation. As users working with demanding applications like in the pre-press segment etc. have to receive accurate colors, it was the mission and target of NEC-Mitsubishi Electric Visual Systems to develop and offer a complete monitor for those demanding users compensating color shift problems with the latest technology available. Thanks to the co-operation of NEC-Mitsubishi Electric Visual Systems with NEC LCD Technologies a wide color and high resolution module for LCD monitors could be developed. Joint efforts of NEC-Mitsubishi Electric Visual Systems, NEC LCD Technologies and Lumileds Lighting lead to the outstanding LED light source technology for wide color LCD monitors and the integration of the LED light source into the LCD module. Based on these key technologies NEC-Mitsubishi Electric Visual Systems has been able to add its leading edge technology to finally release a product being able to now reproduce the Adobe® RGB color space consistently with a LCD monitor!

"NEC-Mitsubishi Electric Visual Systems is advancing display technology and using Luxeon LEDs to deliver a new level of performance to meet its customers' needs. By meeting the needs of arguably the most demanding users, NEC-Mitsubishi Electric Visual Systems will significantly advance the display performance so that ultimately all our customers benefit from the improved color performance," said Mr. Hirotoshi Matsuda, President & CEO NEC-Mitsubishi Electric Visual Systems.

"Utilizing Luxeon LEDs, NEC-Mitsubishi Electric Visual Systems is delivering on screen color performance that has never before been possible in an LCD display," said Mark Pugh, Vice President Strategic Marketing at Lumileds Lighting. "NEC-Mitsubishi Electric Visual Systems' new 21.3" monitor will stand out in the market place."

NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display Europe GmbH targets vertical

applications with large format Desktop LCDs

New solutions address the growing need for 20 and 21-inch high-end LCDs

Munich, September 29 2004 – As a pioneer in the market for high-end LCD monitors, NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display is currently developing improved solutions based on large format 20 and 21-inch LCD monitors for fast growing vertical sectors and niche applications. This year has already witnessed the introduction of products, which are particularly suited to applications such as document management, archiving, process control and medicine. The SpectraView™ models for digital photography and pre-printing operations, presented at Photokina, highlight the level of specialization and diversification achieved by NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display in the high-end sector. NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display’s own research and development divisions have created products with a vast array of features, which are unique in their combinations, making them able to perfectly meet the requirements of business users from widely varying target markets. With innovative technology and timelessly elegant design, all product developments are marked by an uncompromising attitude, with the focus on outstanding picture quality and unlimited compatibility as well as on protecting its clients’ investments by guaranteeing a rapid return on investment (ROI).

As the leading producer of monitors, as early as October 2000 NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display released the first 21-inch LCD monitor on the market, in the shape of the NEC MultiSync® LCD2110, which caused a minor sensation at that time; the current NEC MultiSync® LCD2180UX has continued in the same successful vein. Together with the NEC MultiSync® LCD2080UX+, the two monitors form the basis for current solutions and future developments in terms of the 20 and 21-inch format. With its technological know-how and many years of experience, NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display is already successfully supplying the CAD/CAM, pre-printing, graphics and DTP markets and provides solutions for business office applications including document management, archiving and financial procedures as well as process control and multimedia applications.

At CeBIT 2004, NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display is entering another new market sector: that of certified medical displays. The models in the NEC MultiSync® MD range, together with the appropriate graphics cards, are designed for use with radiological images and in PACS (Picture Archive and Communication System) applications. The distinctive feature of this results screen is the X-LightTM technology, developed by NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display. The unique backlight system enables the exact white-point to be defined and then automatically balanced using an integrated sensor and continuously re-aligned along with brightness.

At this very moment, NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display is aiming to gain a foothold in the Color Workflow sector with its SpectraView-LCD models, exhibited at Photokina. This new technology will be better able to meet the future needs of high-end users in the professional photography, image processing and pre-printing sectors and offer alternatives to the typical tube-based monitors that have previously been used. As a member of this process chain, the 19 and 21-inch high-end monitors, whose hardware can be calibrated and which can therefore fix colors, can be used for soft-proofing, i.e. to check color reproduction without the need for time consuming and expensive sample print-outs from a color printer. In addition to business uses, the new LCD monitors are perfect for digital photography and video processing.

Despite a complete portfolio of high-quality tube-based monitors (CRTs), in this sector in which NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display is well established, the demand for powerful and space-saving LCD solutions is becoming ever greater. LCD LED-Backlight technology, which was exhibited by NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display at this year’s CeBIT, completely bridges the gap in the restrictions on performance demonstrated by CRTs for special applications used in pre-printing, photography and graphics.

The current high-end monitors, NEC MultiSync® LCD2080UX+ and NEC MultiSync® LCD2180UX, already meet the specific requirements of widely varied groups of users with their numerous functions. The following features have been specifically developed in-house by NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display: The GammaComp™ function (10-bit gamma correction) guarantees detailed and brilliant color as well as grayscale reproduction, which is an absolute necessity, in meeting the standards required for pre-printing and in the medical sector. An essential feature for use in radiology is automatic black-level adjustment. The black level can be automatically and manually adjusted to the image in question, thereby guaranteeing simple and individual control of grayscale images, creating the best possible picture.

CableComp™ – a signal deceleration compensation function for cables that are over 100 meters long – makes it possible to display pictures remotely on PC monitors without any loss in image quality. This feature, developed by NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display, is unique on the monitor market and is a result of intensive cooperation with project clients in the financial sector; it is particularly valuable in the financial sector and in control environments. ambix+™ guarantees unlimited compatibility. This feature allows the greatest possible range of combinations and flexibility with VGA, DVI-D and DVI-I connections, as well as representing a secure investment. OmniColor™ includes the industry standard sRGB, and ensures that colors shown on a screen are identical to those that appear on peripheral equipment – including 6-way color control. This is particularly important for users who work with DTP, graphics or web-applications and in pre-printing.

Other features of high-end LCD products from NEC-Mitsubishi Electronics Display include the IPS-Panel Technology used in this equipment. This guarantees the user brilliant picture quality with large viewing angles of 176 degrees horizontal and vertical, with a screen diagonal of 51 or 54 centimeters, at a UXGA resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels. The equipment can display two A4 pages at their actual size, including menus. In the field of document management and archiving, it is possible to rotate the screen from landscape to portrait through 90 degrees, in one movement, thanks to Toro™ Design and to display a whole A3 page on a monitor. Using ErgoDesign®, the height setting of 115 or 130 millimeters as well as the angle of the monitor can be individually adjusted. This ergonomic feature is of particular benefit to employees who share a workspace.

Business displays such as the NEC MultiSync® LCD2180UX are frequently used for multi-screen applications. The unique TileMatrixTM function from NEC-Mitsubishi makes it possible, in extreme cases, to simultaneously control up to 25 pieces of equipment on a monitor wall. The ultra-slim frame of just 16 mm is commonly around 30 percent slimmer than similar products. Advanced NTAA (Advanced Non-Touch Auto Adjustment) and the software-tool, NaViSet™, also developed in-house by NEC-Mitsubishi, makes it possible for an administrator to simply adjust all monitor settings using a mouse and a keyboard, from a central control point. The numerous additional automatic and manual functions, in this particular combination, really make our products stand a head and shoulders above the rest of the market.
