Bok klubben leste boken og kansellerte ingenting: [...]Following a recent newspaper article with regard to a book club featuring books by prominent Canadian lawyer Marie Henein (Nothing But the Truth) and Nobel Peace Prize Winner Nadia Murad (The Last Girl), we wanted to provide some clarification. An opinion that did not reflect the position of the Toronto District School Board was shared with the organizer of the book club prior to staff having an opportunity to read the books – something that is routinely done before giving them to students. Staff are currently reading both books and anticipate being able to add them to the list of titles used in the corresponding course(s). We sincerely apologize to both Ms. Henein and Ms. Murad – both of whom have powerful stories to tell and from whom we believe students would learn a great deal.
  2. Din påstand var at noe var kansellert, men: [...]staff reviewed the material and that students attended the planned talk with Murad.
  3. [...]Keyword searches indicate the claims appear to stem from a past controversy over an event with Toronto students featuring the "Last Girl" author. Murad was scheduled to discuss the book in February 2022 with A Room of Your Own, a literary group for underserved teenage girls that sometimes collaborates with different Canadian school districts to reach students and offer them free books. News outlets reported in 2021 that a Toronto District School Board (TDSB) superintendent told club founder Tanya Marie Lee that students would not participate in the event because Murad's book could promote Islamophobia -- a move that sparked worldwide outcry. Lee told AFP on May 14, 2024 that she had notified the TDSB about two events, one with Murad and another with Canadian criminal defense attorney Marie Henein (archived here and here), that were set to take place over Zoom. She said she was told both speakers might create controversy. "I tried to explain to them that the title meant ISIS -- a terrorist group," Lee said of Murad's book. TDSB clarified its position in a November 12, 2021 press release (archived here). "An opinion that did not reflect the position of the Toronto District School Board was shared with the organizer of the book club prior to staff having an opportunity to read the books -- something that is routinely done before giving them to students. Staff are currently reading both books and anticipate being able to add them to the list of titles used in the corresponding course(s)," said Toronto Education Director Colleen Russell-Rawlins in the statement (archived here). "We sincerely apologize to both Ms. Henein and Ms. Murad – both of whom have powerful stories to tell and from whom we believe students would learn a great deal." TDSB spokesman Ryan Bird said in a May 15, 2024 email that staff reviewed the material and that students attended the planned talk with Murad. Both Lee and Nadia's Initiative confirmed that to AFP.
Men at det som gjengis ikke stemmer ifølge forfatteren selv: [...]Murad's nonprofit, Nadia's Initiative, told AFP in a May 15, 2024 email that she has no upcoming engagements in Canada -- nor any that were scheduled and then canceled. [...]TDSB spokesman Ryan Bird said in a May 15, 2024 email that staff reviewed the material and that students attended the planned talk with Murad.
  5. [...]Social media posts claim a speech from Islamic State kidnapping survivor Nadia Murad was canceled in Canada over concerns that her story could promote Islamophobia. This is misleading; the author's advocacy group told AFP that none of her speaking engagements were scrapped in the country -- and while a 2022 event did face controversy, organizers say it ultimately took place. "Nadia's book event was cancelled in Canada because 'her story could promote Islamophobia,'" says Visegrád 24, an X account that has previously spread misinformation, in a May 11, 2024 post. Similar claims spread elsewhere on platforms such as X and Facebook, with a video on TikTok accumulating tens of thousands of likes. "Somebody who wrote a book about the horrific things that happened to her and she can't do a book signing in Canada because they're worried it would offend Muslims?" says the speaker in the TikTok video. But Murad's nonprofit, Nadia's Initiative, told AFP in a May 15, 2024 email that she has no upcoming engagements in Canada -- nor any that were scheduled and then canceled.
[...]Accusing Trump of fascism, they feel, is like yelling “FIRE!” just because someone, somewhere has lit a small flame—a distraction from the very real challenges facing the United States. And yet it’s precisely that resistance to using the word fascism that’s typical of how fascism works. Fascism thrives by playing down what was previously seen as extremist. And once that happens, any warnings get dismissed as overly alarmist.
[...]one of the most tiresome arguments leveled against socialism claims that Nazism was somehow “socialist,” and so something the Left needs to answer for. Adolf Hitler’s men marshaled the economy for war, put the state above the individual — and, as the killer argument, they even called themselves “National Socialists.” Checkmate? Not quite. Even aside from the fact that other conservative and liberal parties actually voted for full powers to Hitler in 1933, his regime was characterized by massive interventions to help out private business. And the social Darwinism championed by the Nazis, counting the “unproductive” as mere wasteful expense, obeyed the logic of judging human life by the yardstick of profit. Nazistene hatet sosialister. [...]Did you know that “Nazi” is short for “National Socialist”? That means that Hitler and his henchmen were all socialists. Bernie Sanders calls himself a socialist, too. That means Bernie Sanders and his supporters are the same as Nazis … doesn’t it? Anyone who has been on political Twitter in the past decade has seen a version of this syllogism. Conservatives, seeking to escape the “fascist” and “Nazi” labels tossed at them by leftist critics since the 1960s, have turned the tables. Books such as Jonah Goldberg’s “Liberal Fascism” have noted that many leading fascists, such as Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, started out as socialists, just as many early 20th-century “progressives” embraced eugenic ideas ultimately linked to Nazi racist genocide. This connection has become a silver bullet for voices on the right like Dinesh D’Souza and Candace Owens: Not only is the reviled left, embodied in 2020 by figures like Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Elizabeth Warren, a dangerous descendant of the Nazis, but anyone who opposes it can’t possibly have ties to the Nazis’ odious ideas. There is only one problem: This argument is untrue. Although the Nazis did pursue a level of government intervention in the economy that would shock doctrinaire free marketeers, their “socialism” was at best a secondary element in their appeal. Indeed, most supporters of Nazism embraced the party precisely because they saw it as an enemy of and an alternative to the political left. A closer look at the connection between Nazism and socialism can help us better understand both ideologies in their historical contexts and their significance for contemporary politics. The Nazi regime had little to do with socialism, despite it being prominently included in the name of the National Socialist German Workers’ Party. The NSDAP, from Hitler on down, struggled with the political implications of having socialism in the party name. Some early Nazi leaders, such as Gregor and Otto Strasser, appealed to working-class resentments, hoping to wean German workers away from their attachment to existing socialist and communist parties. The NSDAP’s 1920 party program, the 25 points, included passages denouncing banks, department stores and “interest slavery,” which suggested a quasi-Marxist rejection of free markets. But these were also typical criticisms in the anti-Semitic playbook, which provided a clue that the party’s overriding ideological goal wasn’t a fundamental challenge to private property. Instead of controlling the means of production or redistributing wealth to build a utopian society, the Nazis focused on safeguarding a social and racial hierarchy. They promised solidarity for members of the Volksgemeinschaft (“racial community”) even as they denied rights to those outside the charmed circle. Additionally, while the Nazis tried to appeal to voters across the spectrum, the party’s founders and initial base were small-business men and artisans, not the industrial proletariat of Marxist lore. Their first notable electoral successes were in small towns and Protestant rural areas in present-day Thuringia and Saxony, among voters suspicious of cosmopolitan, secular cities who associated both “socialism” and “capitalism” with Jews and foreigners.
[...]As most of you are aware, I've spent most of my adult life studying fascism, particularly American Fascism. It's a weird thing I started many years ago when most people had no idea why I was doing it. And now a few decades on, professors from Brown and Stamford listen to my podcast and send me emails. Meanwhile I didn't finish college, I went to prison. Life is strange like that. Anyway, I don't focus on reading what Leftists write about Fascism. The tendency is...they have no idea what they're fucking talking about to begin with. And that...dirth of understanding bleeds into how everyone Else understands Fascism, because most people who aren't Fascists, don't read Fascist theory or literature. You should. It's interesting stuff...and you get insights you wouldn't get from just reading someone else's critique. I talk to a lot of people who follow my page or listen to the show about Their beliefs and theories about Fascism. And they're...typically wrong. The most common misconception I think I see is that Fascists are insecure and their ideology rises out of that insecurity. This is a mistake. Fascists lack the self awareness to Be truly insecure. It's not so much eternal insecurity as eternal victimhood. Every Fascist you're ever going to meet is running on the fumes of resentment and aggrievement with little to no awareness of their own contributions to their circumstances. They've chosen the door marked "Everyone Else" in the Problem Room. Second misconception: they haven't been duped. These people have not been tricked, worked, convinced, or brainwashed. Contrary to what you'd Like to believe...these people know exactly what they're doing and they're doing it because it's going to harm their enemies, even at their own expense. And if it fails, they will go back to pretending they had no idea what happened - with intentions aimed at self preservation. The whole "sheep" thing is a clever way to skirt accountability...and honestly not cleaning all the infection out of the wound just guarantees you'll end up with gangrene later. And the last thing: You're not going to reason with this. You're not going to point out the logical fallacies and break some kind of magic spell. You're not going to appeal to empathy and make them realize people are being hurt. You're not going to rationalize with them. Their sense of morals and logic Doesn't work like yours does. This took me a long time to understand. But when you read what they say, or the books they write...you come away feeling like you've listened in on a conversation between supervillains. But they don't...reckon with morality like "normal" people do. Fascist morality is a relativistic, slippery bit. Here, they're trying to stop the genocide of the Anglo people. So the ruthlessness is justified...they're dying out and fighting for their lives. And of course they're *not*. But you can't tell Them that. It's a psychosomatic illness that causes a relatively healthy animal to lash out like it thinks something's trying to kill it. And an animal that thinks it's about to die is what? Dangerous. Exactly. To paraphrase Thompson, you can turn your back on a person, but never turn your back on a fascist. Just things to consider.
[...]the House panel also released a new cache of documents from Epstein’s estate containing direct evidence of Epstein’s links to Israeli intelligence: Epstein’s personal calendars reveal that a senior Israeli intelligence officer, with personal ties to former CIA Director Leon Panetta, lived at Epstein’s Manhattan apartment for multiple stretches between 2013 and 2016. When cross-referenced with emails leaked from the inbox of former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, a portrait emerges of Epstein at the nexus of high-ranking intelligence officials in both the U.S. and Israel. [...]This is the fourth piece in Drop Site’s ongoing series on Jeffrey Epstein’s role in brokering intelligence deals for Israel. In the first, we exposed Epstein’s role in brokering a security agreement between Israel and Mongolia. In the second, we identified Epstein’s effort to set up a backchannel between Israel and Russia during the Syria civil war. In the third, we showed Epstein’s role as a key facilitator of a security agreement between Israel and the West African nation of Côte d’Ivoire.
