Makes you wonder...

Intel lost 6.7% chipset market share in Q3

Intel's chipset competitors stole market share from the chip giant during Q3.

So claims a Merrill Lynch report cited by a number of websites. The report assigns 62.1 per cent of the chipset market to Intel, 18.5 per cent to VIA, 9.9 per cent to SiS, 4.5 per cent to ATI and 4.2 per cent to Nvidia.

Between Q3 and Q2, Intel's share fell 6.7 percentage points, with VIA taking just over half - 3.6 percentage points - of the lost share. The rest was distributed evenly between SiS, ATI and Nvidia.

Getting Intel Back on the Inside Track

After a year in which the chipmaker blundered from one execution gaffe to another and rival Advanced Micro Devices stole the limelight with hot new chips, Intel's directors offered a welcome vote of confidence: On Nov. 8, they formally tapped him (Paul S. Otellini) to succeed CEO Craig R. Barrett next spring.

But there's no time to celebrate. Rival AMD has pulled ahead in the latest generation of server and PC chips. That puts Intel's key partners, Microsoft and Dell, in an awkward spot: loath to damage long ties with Intel but under pressure to work with a rising AMD. To keep Intel ahead, Otellini has laid out a three-pronged strategy: Package chips together to meet customers' needs, adopt new metrics to ensure manufacturing and execution glitches don't happen again, and improve relationships with Dell and Microsoft.

[...]

Whatever the merits of the platform strategy, analysts say, Intel needs to shore up relations with Microsoft and Dell. In recent weeks, Dell, which uses Intel's chips exclusively, has sounded more serious about using AMD chips. "We've been studying AMD products closely," Dell President Kevin B. Rollins said on Nov. 11. "Some have come a long way."

Microsoft, meanwhile, will snub Intel's high-end server chip, Itanium, in an upcoming software update. Otellini "isn't thrilled" about Microsoft's decision, but he says he understands because the Itanium market is not big enough for the software giant. Otellini says relations with Microsoft are the best in a long time. As for Dell, he accepts that AMD's success in servers has "probably [put] some pressure on them."

That's why catching up with AMD is key. But it won't be easy. Analysts say Intel may be 18 months behind in creating its own technology. What's more, the company has developed a habit of overpromising. That's why Otellini vows to set more reasonable deadlines. He has also started killing nonessential projects so engineers can focus on getting the new chips right and avoiding manufacturing glitches. Otellini's challenges are clear. If he prevails, he will have proved he deserves his new title.

Intel's Army of Chip Makers Fights for Dominance

For Intel's top manufacturing executive, Robert Baker, the challenge is also to show that a technology powerhouse with a manufacturing staff of 45,000 -- six times the entire payroll of rival AMD -- can be a nimble innovator.

"Part of what I do is put the emphasis on how fast we respond," Baker, 49, said in a recent interview.

Intel needs to move faster than ever in its 36-year history after a series of product blunders in 2004, including a recall of defective desktop computer chips.

Meanwhile, Advanced Micro Devices Inc., Intel's smaller rival that made its name by making bargain-basement Intel knockoffs, has been gaining in consumer niches like chips for PC gaming and computer servers. And with help from partner IBM, AMD has honed its manufacturing, especially in factory automation.

"AMD is the perceived leader on the automation side, not Intel," said Risto Puhakka, vice president of industry forecaster VLSI Research.

But AMD is not the only threat. South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. has been spending billions on chip factory equipment and has impressed the engineering community with its manufacturing research. Texas Instruments Inc., which competes against Intel in cellular phone chips, is at work on a $3 billion advanced factory of its own.

Analysis: Intel's results mask underlying problems

On the surface, the strong fourth quarter and full 2004 year financial results posted by Intel Corp. should silence skeptics critical of recent moves by the chip making giant. However, a closer look at Intel's results indicate the company faces stiff challenges in the year ahead.

The net profit amounted to $2.13 billion, compared to $2.17 billion in the same quarter last year. That profit was on revenues of $9.60 billion. In the same period last year, the revenues were $8.74 billion.

But it warned that operating profit for the fourth quarter will be 'significantly down' from the $68.4 million it earned in its third quarter.

Sales of the firm's CPUs have increased compared to the third quarter. But the firm's NOR Flash division will have lower fourth quarter sales and will turn in a loss.

Intel's Broken Record

By now, you might be wondering why I'm not eating crow for my Halloween recommendation of shorting Intel. Well, not so fast, bucko. Take a look at the quarterly numbers. Yes, sales were a record $9.6 billion, up 10% year-over-year. But over the same period, profits were -- wait for it -- down 2.3%. And quarterly net income came in $50 million lower than during last year's fourth quarter. (Profits were flat on a per-share basis.)

What happened? For one, Intel's cost of goods skyrocketed by almost $500 million for the second quarter in a row. It's anybody's guess what actually caused the rise, but a warning from rival Advanced Micro Devices could provide a clue.

AMD said this week that its fourth-quarter sales would come in well below estimates because of intense pricing pressure from Intel in the NOR flash market. ("NOR" is short for "not or," a Boolean logic operator and one of the two types of flash memory, the other being "NAND," for "not and.") As if in conformation, Intel said in its earnings report that it had regained market leadership in NOR flash because of "continued strong growth." But it's not that simple, folks. Though year-over-year flash sales were up more than 60%, Intel's flash revenue sequentially rose less than 1%.

Now look at the gross profit numbers: Year-over-year, revenue rose by $857 million, while the cost of producing those sales increased by $1.04 billion. Look at that again, because it's hugely important. For every dollar of new sales in 2004, Intel spent $1.21.

No sane person would say that Intel's operations experts have gone missing. This company is too good and too well-run for this apparent inefficiency to be an accident. So what the heck happened? AMD happened, that's what. Take the AMD Opteron 32/64-bit combo chip, for example, which has scored a flood of design wins and has led to rumors of a deal with Dell. Such successes by AMD have put rival Intel in an odd place: It has forced new investments, and more spending.

Intel ought to be applauded for a record-breaking year. But the chipmaker paid a high price to do so well. And if it continues, 2005 won't be any better than 2004. In fact, it could be a whole lot worse.
