Hi :)

'Since there are quite a bunch of oldschool synth users on this

forum I can't think of a better place to ask this..

I'm on the verge of buying another synth, I have two candidates. A

Roland Juno106, and JX-8P.

They cost exactly the same (about $500), but are in different stores

in town.

I've wanted a juno for ages, as it's a really straight forward synth

where everything is cleverly laid

out in front of you, sounds wonderful even though it's only a single

DCO + suboscillator.

Kinda the opposite of the massive Ion that I already have. Juno

would be a great learning tool and great sound..it's the real deal.

I spent an hour with it in the store today. It has no aftertouch of

velocity sens.

Then there's the other candidate. Roland JX-8P. 2xDCO's, but no

knobs on the front. Only the boring

"Edit parameter" stuff and a Data slider. Kinda cripples your

creativity when you have to wade through

parameters to edit Filter freq etc. Although they're all printed on

the front case.

so this one is basically twice the sonic power, has aftertouch

(assignable to brilliance, vibrato or volume) but was much less

commonly used. And you can detune the oscillators, which you of

course cannot on the Juno. The aftertouch was awesome, but I had to

use LOTS of force on the keys to activate it, so not exactly

practical unless I play leads with one hand.

I can't decide, go for the best interface, or the best sound? Some

say the Juno has fantastic sound, same about JX8P. it sells without

the PG-800 controller which is more or less essential. They have it

in the store, but it was reserved for someone else.

There was also a problem with the JX-8P in that it went into a kind

of crash after about 20 minutes (The display reset to show "Roland

JX-8P 12") and nothing would work, and I had to turn it off and on,

then it'd do the countdown from 12-0 (warmup?). The clerk thought it

could be the backup battery that was bad. Is something like that

easily fixed? It probably needs to be changed. Is it worth that much

hassle?
