  2. Italia melder seg på. Now Italy has shaken up the diplomatic dynamics by drafting a document with Belgium, Malta and Bulgaria urging the Commission to explore alternative options to using the Russian assets to keep Ukraine afloat over the coming years. The four countries are referring to a Plan B to issue joint EU debt to finance Ukraine over the coming years. However, this idea has its own problems. Critics note it will add to the high debt burdens of Italy and France, and requires unanimity — meaning it can be vetoed by Hungary’s Kremlin-friendly Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. The four countries — even if joined by pro-Kremlin Hungary and Slovakia — would not be able to build a blocking minority but their public criticism erodes the Commission's hopes of striking a political deal next week.
  3. Zelenskyy says issue of territories must be decided by Ukrainian people through elections or referendum President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on 11 December that the people of Ukraine must answer the question concerning territories. "I believe that the people of Ukraine will answer this question. Either in the format of elections or in the format of a referendum, but there must be a position of the people of Ukraine." Zelenskyy added that much now depends on the situation at the front lines and the capabilities of the Ukrainian military. Merz kommenterer også om territorium: We proposed that we, together with the US administration, finalise the discussion of the documents. This was a proposal that he was not aware of at the time of our telephone conversation, as it was sent to the Americans later. We did indeed send this document late in the afternoon, and it concerned territorial concessions that Ukraine could accept. But this was a question that the Ukrainian president and the Ukrainian people had to answer. And that is exactly what we told President Trump," Merz said.
  4. Belgium has sent a list of amendments it wants, to ensure it isn't forced to repay the money to Moscow alone if sanctions are lifted. De Wever said he won't back the reparations loan if his concerns aren't met. All hope isn't lost yet, diplomats say. Ambassadors will go line by line through Belgium's requests, figure out the biggest concerns and seek to address them. There's still room for maneuver. The plan is to come as close to the Belgian position as they can. But a week before leaders meet, the EU is turning the screws. If De Wever continues to block the plan ― a path he's been on for several months, putting forward additional conditions and demands ― he will find himself in an uncomfortable and remarkable position for the leader of a country that for so long has been pro-EU, according to an EU diplomat with knowledge of the discussions taking place. The Belgium leader would be frozen out and ignored, just like Hungary’s Viktor Orbán has been given the cold shoulder over democratic backsliding and his refusal to play ball on sanctioning Russia.
  5. DIY UMPK kits. "Not everyone knows that first the FAB bomb is hung on the aircraft, and then right at the airfield, the UMPB module with wings is screwed onto this bomb." (Serhii Flash)
In Ukraine, they plan to check about 50 more colleges and higher education institutions, where an abnormal increase in the number of newly minted students over 25 years old is recorded. ..in total, about 50 000 students have already been expelled.
  8. Lithuania declares state of emergency over balloons from Belarus Vilnius airport has been closed several times due to the weather balloons, which Lithuania says are sent by smugglers transporting cigarettes and constitute a "hybrid attack" by Belarus, a close ally of Russia. "The state of emergency is announced not only due to civil aviation disruptions but also due to interests of national security," Interior Minister Vladislav Kondratovic told a government meeting broadcast live on Tuesday.
But a year after Kallasová's arrival, there is a disillusionment with her performance, even in Prague. “It has no line to the United States. This is a colossal failure, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio laughed at her," a senior Czech diplomat told HN. He points to the fact that Rubio refuses to meet with Kallas. The Czech diplomat points out that he has similar views with Kallas. However, he said foreign policy cannot be done in the way that the former Estonian prime minister operates.

  11. Zelensky: Ukraine and Europe will finalize their vision of the “peace plan” on Tuesday President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that advisers on national security of Ukraine and European states will continue to work on the latest version of the "peace plan" and complete it on Tuesday. Zelensky reaffirmed that the initial "peaceful proposal" of the United States has changed and was reduced from 28 to 20 points, and on several issues - territories, post-war reconstruction and security guarantees - there is no final decision.
  18. Det ble diskutert fødselstall her for noen dager siden. Ukraine stares down the barrel of population collapse The country has both the highest death rates and lowest birth rates in the world, according to 2024 estimates in the CIA World Factbook: for every birth there are around three deaths. According to government estimates, Ukraine's average male life expectancy dropped from 65.2 years before the war to 57.3 years in 2024. For women, the figure fell from 74.4 to 70.9. Ukraine will need millions of people to rebuild its shattered economy, experts and politicians say, and to be able to defend itself in a post-war future should Moscow attack again, as many Ukrainians fear it will. The Kyiv government sought to address the crisis last year when it outlined a demographic strategy to 2040. The document warned that Ukraine faced a deficit of 4.5 million workers over the next decade. Sectors that would be most in need of labour included construction, technology and administrative services.
  20. Trenger visst ikke våpen i fredstid? Italy Slams Brakes on NATO Program to Buy US Weapons for Ukraine Italy’s foreign minister said it would be “premature” for his country to participate in a NATO program to buy US weapons for Ukraine in light of ongoing peace negotiations. “If we reach an agreement and fighting ceases, weapons won’t be needed anymore,” Antonio Tajani, who’s also a deputy prime minister, told reporters in Brussels on Wednesday. “Other things such as security guarantees will be needed.” The remarks are the clearest sign yet that Giorgia Meloni’s government has changed its strategy on Ukraine after running out of funds and weathering tensions within the ruling coalition. While the government insists that it will continue to support Kyiv, it is also the first in Europe to explicitly suggest that Ukraine should not be provided with additional weapons while a ceasefire is being negotiated.
