Læreren min som er litt "sånn fred og krig og sult og sånn ut" fortelte meg nettopp at han har vært skytter på 12,7 på Leopard.

Blir litt som og få vite at en avholds var en fyllefant.

12,7mm .50 Kaliber Browning Machine Gun:

Kort liten artikkel om den også:

Ah yes, the old "Ma Deuce". Judging by it's looks some would guess it's only been in service since Vietnam. Oh how wrong they are. It has seen among the longest military histories of a any gun, ever. Adopted as a .50 Caliber FUCK YOU UP! machine gun in the 1920's it's still in service today. So massive is it's caliber that it's not much of an infantry weapon. It's almost exclusively used as a mounted gun in static defense or it's mounted on a vehicle. Typically the latter. Throughout WW2 this 84 pound terror helped the allies dominate the skies. It was used as the standard aircraft machine gun up until the US stopped using machine guns on fighters altogether. It's .50 caliber cartridge was no more powerful than the various cartridges used by other aircraft (like 12mm) and nothing compared to the cannons attached to German fighters but still a force to be reckoned with. Especially when one fighter had 6. Bombers used them to help ward off enemy fighters too. Many aircraft today use the same gun, entirely unchanged since the day it was adopted. When fired from the air upon victims on the ground there's simply no place to hide. It's losing ground to guns like the Apache's 30mm chain gun. But it's still ticking.

On the ground it's no less effective. It's too heavy to lug around but it has made defending captured territory much easier. Totally outclassing enything an attacking enemy could come up with. One hit won't just put any man down, it'll tear him apart. It's range is well beyond what any other gun has too. Back in Vietnam a North Viet general was sniped with a specially modified M2 from miles away. The same principle has since founded the various big-caliber anti-material rifles like the Barrett. On vehicles it has helped countless Deuce and a Half convoys make it to where they need to go. It's still used to great effect in Iraq, it's fearsome .50 BMG cartridge has shown many an Iraqi insurgent that it's a force to be reckoned with. Even behind bulletproof material you're not safe. APC armor has proven no match for the AP rounds, up until WW2 battle tanks didn't do much better either. Just as it was effective against aircraft from aircraft it's effective from the ground. It has seen widespread use as an anti-aircraft gun.

What has made this a true world beater? The real answer is who. It was made by none other than Browning. And when he makes something, it doesn't need changing. He took the successful 1917 and just made it bigger, the only reason that's gone is because the 30.06 cartridge is obsolete and lighter GPMGs have taken it's place. The M2 remains as the default high-caliber multi-purpose vehicle gun around the world. In part because of it's success so few other designs have tried taking it's place. There are also guns like the soviet DSHK and although it has been stated that there's a new design slated to replace it the M2's distinctive thump won't be dying out any time soon.

YAY!
