Ny leilighet, hvilken ISP?

Anbefalte innlegg

Sorry to hijack this thread in English.

I moved to Tromsø not long ago and I'm looking at ISPs here. I'm also interested in NGT.

I actually need to install a new phone line where I'm staying, so my questions are:

- Is Telenor the only one to carry out this kind of installation?

- How much does it cost and how long does it take?

- Are there alternatives with other ISP that offer totally unbundled lines (phone + Internet) so I wouldn't have to take a subscription with Telenor or other?

- Are there any ISPs in Norway that offer free unlimited VoIP calls? TV over ADSL?

Takk for deres hjelp!

Hi!

I will begin from the top.

- Yes, Telenor is the only phoneoperator in Norway, so they have to install your phoneline. That is if you need a whole new phoneline from the telephonecentral.

If there already is stretched a phonecabel to your apartment almost any ISP can install your phoneline.

- I have no idea what it might cost if you have to lay a whole new phonecable in the ground, but I don't think that that will actually nessicary because almost every single house in Tromsø has a phoneline connected to it.

- You don't have to sign a telephone contract to get ADSL from Telenor or any other ISP. That is completly optional.

- If you want to have TV, VoIP and internet through one ISP, I will strongly recommand Troms Kraft Fiber. Their solution isn't ADSL, but fiberoptics, and you will get a high-speed internet connection, TV and VoIP for a small charge.

This does how ever cost 3-4000 thousand NOK to install, and it is only avalible in certain areas of Tromsø.

If you can read and understand norwegian, take a look at their website: http://www.tromsbynett.no

Telenor is the sole owner of all the copper lines in Norway, but its not telenor themselfs that connect to their lines when you order a phoneline, in most cases thats Sønnico. the best way is to look around for a phone subscription (that is if you like to have a regular phoneline analogue/ISDN) this can be through Telenor, tele2 or others. When you request this they will make all the arrangement to get you connected. To get connected first time is around 1000krones, and it takes from 4-21working days (it depends how many people that is ahead of you in the system). Any phone operator will have a monthly charge for this, in my case i have Telenor analog and pay around 259krones a month and have free phone calls to any house phone in Norway.

There is also another option of not connect to the "phone line" but only connect your brodband connection, in that case you will have have to pay an extra monthly "connection fee" of around 60krones in addition to your broadband connection.

May i suggest: Telepriser - broadband

here you can see the different speeds and providers.

Thanks a lot for your replies Zappza and Frank!

It turns out there is already an analog phone socket where I live in the basement, which I didn't know at first.

It has been in use in the past. I suppose it should cost less than 1000 kr to re-connect in this case? I've heard around 400.

I appreciate the details you gave me Frank.

I'm especially interested in that solution that involves paying additional connection fee of 60 kr.

If I understand correctly, this would avoid having to pay a regular monthly subscription to any telecom provider? (Telenor, Tele2 etc).

Don't I need a active telephone number to subscribe with any ISP first?

As for Troms Kraft Fiber Zappza, I had heard about it, thanks for the link!

From what I read on there, it seems like it costs around 28 000 kr...of which 60% can be financed. Whatever the price, it's not worth it considering my situation. Maybe when I buy a house in Tromsø in the future!

No you dont. But you maybe need to have an technical engineer to verify that your phone line is actually working. It will cost you around 600-900Nok and you will in most cases get the internett connection on the same day if everything runs smoothly.

with my experiences i would not choose Ventelo! go for NGT

good luck

Thank you for your input. I placed an order with NGT earlier today, I think the cost is around 500 to have an engineer check the phone line. Wonder how long the whole thing will take.

I hope NGT will be fine, I read quite a lot of bad stories!

Is there any independent website where I can check how far I am from the nearest ADSL exchange (sentral)?

All info is coming from kapaks regarding your line lenght. Check this link:

http://www.freakforum.nu/forum/showthread.php?t=17603

Regarding the installation its normal to take atleast 2-4 weeks. And all the bad stories you have heard about they are all old. Just be relaxed. Most ppl is to stressed out and makes everything into one big thing just because the installation took one week longer than expected....

I had an installation for ngt for some friends not long ago and i got no problems. Hope you will have the same.

Great link, thank you very much!

Kapaks displays the line capacity but not the actual distance from the ADSL exchange. It's still good info to have!

Result is 3616/512...so bad. I'm surprised that I could be so far out from the central (at least 4km with such a rate), Tromsø is not that big and I live in a quite dense area.

Looks like problems with NGT are old, you're right, last year, I don't see anything terrible in recent posts on forums.

Yeah, I am know that it costs much to get, and it isn't worth it if you arent going to live in that location for a while.

But if you do buy a house and connect fiber to it, the value of the house will increase :)
