Poll: Most Americans believe Israel’s response in Gaza is excessive, countries should recognize Palestinian state https://www.timesofisrael.com/liveblog_entry/poll-most-americans-believe-israels-response-in-gaza-is-excessive-countries-should-recognize-palestinian-state/ Most Americans believe countries should recognize Palestinian state, Reuters/Ipsos poll finds https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/most-americans-believe-countries-should-recognize-palestinian-state-reutersipsos-2025-08-20/
Germany slams Israel’s Gaza military plans, ‘difficult to understand’ how this frees hostages https://www.timesofisrael.com/liveblog_entry/germany-slams-israels-gaza-military-plans-difficult-to-understand-how-this-frees-hostages/ The German government says it “rejects the escalation” of Israel’s campaign in Gaza after Israel approved a plan to conquer Gaza City and authorized calling up around 60,000 reservists. Germany finds it “increasingly difficult to understand how these actions will lead to the freeing of all the hostages, or to a ceasefire,” government spokesman Steffen Meyer tells reporters.
  4. En meningsmåling i Tyskland viser at majoriteten av befolkningen for første gang støtter anerkjennelse av Palestina som stat. Germany updates: Most support Palestinian statehood Most Germans now back recognizing a Palestinian state, a survey shows. https://www.dw.com/en/germany-updates-most-support-palestinian-statehood/live-73585308 En annen måling viser at to tredeler av tyskere støtter avgjørelsen om stans i våpenstøtte til Israel. 5. Australia fires back at Netanyahu: ‘Strength not measured by how many people you can blow up’ https://www.timesofisrael.com/liveblog_entry/australia-fires-back-at-netanyahu-strength-not-measured-by-how-many-people-you-can-blow-up/ Australia lashes Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu after he said the country’s prime minister was weak, with a top minister saying strength is more than “how many people you can blow up.” For decades Australia has considered itself a close friend of Israel, but the relationship has swiftly unravelled since Canberra announced last week it would recognize a Palestinian state. Netanyahu drastically escalated a war of words on Tuesday night, calling his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese a “weak politician who betrayed Israel.” Australian Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke says Wednesday it’s the sign of a frustrated leader “lashing out.” “Strength is not measured by how many people you can blow up or how many children you can leave hungry,” Burke tells national broadcaster ABC.
  9. Uttalelse fra Australias utenriksminister, etter den israelske regjeringen stemplet Australia som "antisemittisk" for å trekke visumet til en israelsk politiker som promoterte etnisk rensing: Statement on Israeli Government’s decision to revoke visas for Australian Diplomats in the occupied Palestinian territories https://www.foreignminister.gov.au/minister/penny-wong/media-release/statement-israeli-governments-decision-revoke-visas-australian-diplomats-occupied-palestinian-territories At a time when dialogue and diplomacy are needed more than ever, the Netanyahu Government is isolating Israel and undermining international efforts towards peace and a two-state solution. This is an unjustified reaction, following Australia’s decision to recognise Palestine. We will continue to work with partners as we contribute international momentum to a two-state solution, a ceasefire in Gaza and release of the hostages. Australia welcomes different races, religions and views, united by respect for each other's humanity and for each other's right to live in peace. We safeguard our communities and protect all Australians from hate and harm. The Australian Government will always take decisive action against antisemitism.
Far-right ministers warn against Gaza deal as hostages’ families demand accord https://www.timesofisrael.com/far-right-ministers-warn-against-gaza-deal-as-hostages-families-demand-accord/ After Hamas offers new position, hawks say Israel must conquer Gaza City while relatives declare that ‘The people will not allow the PM to torpedo yet another deal’. Reports of Hamas’s agreement to a new ceasefire-hostage release proposal in Gaza on Monday drew swift reactions in Israel, as proponents of a deal urged the government to reach an agreement, while opponents — including key coalition members — warned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against doing so. (...) The Hostages and Missing Families Forum said in response to the reports: “We demand that Netanyahu immediately conduct continuous negotiations for the release of all the hostages and the captives from Gaza… The people will not allow the prime minister to torpedo yet another deal.”
  11. Gisselfamiliene vil ha ny nasjonal streik neste helg. Hostage families call for second nationwide strike on Sunday https://www.timesofisrael.com/liveblog_entry/hostage-families-call-for-second-nationwide-strike-on-sunday/ The Hostages and Missing Families Forum calls for another nationwide strike to pressure the government into ending the war in exchange for the release of hostages on Sunday after a similar action yesterday. It says that yesterday’s protests “prove in a clear manner and a strong voice what most of the country wants: The nation of Israel supports the return of hostages and the end of the war!”
Israel kicks out diplomats, accuses Australia of fueling antisemitism after MK banned https://www.timesofisrael.com/liveblog-august-18-2025/ Sa’ar, who accuses the Australian government of fanning antisemitism, writes that he also instructed Israel’s embassy in Canberra “to carefully examine any official Australian visa application for entry to Israel.” It’s unclear if the policy will affect all Australian requests or only those from Australian officials.
Far-right Israeli politician's visa cancelled ahead of speaking tour https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-08-18/simcha-rothman-visa-cancelled/105668088 The Israeli politician was due to speak at events in Australia in a matter of days, including a Sydney event next Thursday hosted by the Australian Jewish Association. But his visa has been cancelled, and Mr Simcha has been banned from travel to Australia for three years — a condition that is sometimes applied to a cancellation depending on the grounds it was cancelled on. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said Australia would not accept people travelling to cause division. "Our government takes a hard line on people who seek to come to our country and spread division," Mr Burke said. "If you are coming to Australia to spread a message of hate and division, we don't want you here. "Under our government, Australia will be a country where everyone can be safe, and feel safe."
Qatargate: Qatar paid $10 million to ex-security officials, Netanyahu associates https://www.ynetnews.com/article/sy4nu61txe Qatar paid an estimated $10 million to senior Israeli security veterans, former Mossad officials and associates of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to figures cited by law enforcement authorities in the “Qatargate” investigation. The findings, reported by Israel’s public broadcaster Kan, are based on money-tracking by police and the Israel Money Laundering and Terror Financing Prohibition Authority. The payments allegedly spanned two and a half years, beginning in 2022 and continuing until October 2024, in exchange for various services. (...) According to investigators, Qatar funneled hundreds of thousands of dollars each month into the project, transferring funds through a British company and then into an Israeli firm run by ex-security officials. Among those questioned was retired IDF Maj. Gen. Yoav “Poly” Mordechai, a former senior defense and Mossad figure. Payments also went to employees of Coyos, a tech provider, and to “Perception,” a PR firm owned by Netanyahu adviser Israel Einhorn. Another Netanyahu aide, Jonatan Urich, worked under the firm. Investigators say Perception received $45,000 a month for Lighthouse for roughly two years. A second, smaller campaign under scrutiny involved lobbyist Jay Footlik, who promoted Qatar’s image in Israel. That initiative, with a much smaller budget, included hiring a government-relations consultant and spokesperson. According to investigators, Eli Feldstein was paid about 40,000 shekels a month while serving as Netanyahu’s spokesman.
Hundreds of thousands demonstrate in Tel Aviv at end of nationwide day of hostage protests https://www.timesofisrael.com/hundreds-of-thousands-gather-in-tel-aviv-to-mark-end-of-nationwide-day-of-hostage-protests/ Hostages forum says 500,000 attended rally, over 1 million protested across the country Sunday; at rally, ex-captives urge Trump to push Israel to ‘end the suffering,’ ‘make peace’. Hundreds of thousands of people crowded in central Tel Aviv on Sunday night, capping a nationwide day of protests and strikes calling on the government to end the war in Gaza and secure the release of the hostages held there by Palestinian terrorists. The rally in Tel Aviv appeared to be one of the biggest since the war began nearly two years ago, and according to the Hostages and Missing Families Forum was attended by over half a million people, though there were no official police estimates for the crowd’s size. The forum also estimated that some 1 million people had taken part in protests across the country throughout the day, as protest groups and organizations joined forces to stage a major day of civil disobedience after the cabinet voted earlier this month to conquer Gaza City despite warnings by top security officials that this would endanger the hostages. Other major protests took place in Jerusalem, Haifa, Beersheba and several smaller cities, with demonstrators blocking roads and highways, demanding that an end to the war be reached. Before Sunday night’s massive rally began, at least 38 people had been arrested across the country as activists blocked streets and in some cases clashed with officers who had been trying to reopen them, according to police. And after the rally, police said six more had been arrested after hundreds “disrupted public order,” clashed with cops and blocked the city’s Ayalon Highway. That road and all other roads were reopened to traffic, police added. The day of protests came alongside a major strike, which was joined by hundreds of local authorities, businesses, universities, tech companies and other organizations, though Israel’s central labor union, the Histadrut, did not join the effort. Addressing the crowd of hundreds of thousands at the rally at Hostages Square in Tel Aviv, the fathers of two of the hostages accused the government of abandoning their sons in captivity for political reasons. Ofir Braslavaski, father of hostage Rom Braslavski, said that he is watching his son waste away, and can do nothing about it. Videos of Braslavski and hostage Evyatar Davidwere released last week in which they appearedemaciated and deeply distressed. “The entire country saw, all of the leaders saw, but the cabinet chose to expand the war and abandon them,” Braslavski said. “My Rom has no time, the hostages have no time.” Yehuda Cohen, father of hostage Nimrod Cohen, echoed the accusations against the government: “We’re living under a terror organization that refuses to give us back our children for political reasons,” he said of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. “My son, Nimrod, is suffering so that the government can build settlements in Gaza, and I refuse to let him be sacrificed on that altar,” Cohen continued. “This country won’t return to normality until the hostages are returned in a comprehensive deal and the war ends,” he said. “If the Netanyahu government isn’t willing to do this, then they should quit and allow someone more responsible to do so.”
Hamas blacklisted by UN for systemic sexual crimes on Oct. 7, puts Israel on notice https://www.jpost.com/international/article-864247 The blacklisting of Hamas is a bold, declarative, and diplomatic move, and could have practical implications, but that depends on the next steps that are taken. (…) The process of documentation that led to the listing of Hamas, nearly two years after it led the cross-border massacre attack that killed 1,200 people and saw 251 taken hostage, is a combination of victims’ and witness testimonies and a UN mission to Israel early in 2024, which were bolstered and coalesced by a Dinah Project report last month. CRSV is notoriously hard to prove, as when such a wide-scale attack takes place, evidence gets destroyed along the way or convoluted. It is therefore hard to gather later and, due to the nature of the attacks, much harder to present as concrete evidence to eventually bring justice. Additionally, in this case, many of the victims were killed. Another aspect of these types of crimes is that survivors are left with unbearable trauma, and don’t always come forward with their stories, or at least not always right away. Guterres also called for the “immediate, unconditional, and dignified release of all hostages, while ensuring their humane treatment and for humanitarian access to them pending their release.” Hamas is currently holding 50 people in captivity.
Nearly two years after tragedy, 2nd Nova Healing Concert unites 30,000 in Tel Aviv https://www.timesofisrael.com/nearly-two-years-after-tragedy-nova-healing-concert-unites-30000-in-tel-aviv/ Survivors, bereaved families and artists gather to honor victims of the October 7, 2023, Nova massacre and celebrate resilience, hope, and community.
  23. Israel’s military has transformed every bit of Gazan territory within about half a mile of the Israeli border into a wasteland. Armored bulldozers have systematically leveled one home after another. Combat engineers have laid explosives and triggered controlled demolitions inside once-bustling factories. Troops have torn up and denied Palestinians any access to the fertile farmland that once sustained lives and livelihoods. In its place, the Israeli military has established a roughly 1-kilometer-wide buffer zone (about 0.6 miles) from which it has banished Palestinians and killed or fired at those who do set foot within its unmarked perimeter – all of which it has never officially acknowledged. Now, in interviews with CNN and testimonials to an Israeli watchdog group, Israeli soldiers who were deployed to Gaza are revealing how the military carried out the destruction of civilian infrastructure to create the buffer area and the loose rules of engagement that have allegedly resulted in Israeli troops firing on and killing unarmed Palestinians. These testimonies reveal Israeli military practices that arguably violate international humanitarian law and, in some cases are war crimes, according to international law experts. https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2025/04/07/middleeast/israel-gaza-buffer-zone-troops-intl
  25. 'There's No Hunger in Gaza,' Say Netanyahu, the Israeli Army and Media. Meanwhile, Starvation Worsens https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/2025-08-14/ty-article-magazine/no-hunger-in-gaza-say-netanyahu-the-israeli-army-and-media-as-starvation-worsens/00000198-a8a1-d539-a5b8-fdf186180000 The well-documented rising starvation in Gaza is now acknowledged by nearly the entire world, yet Israel continues to peddles the lie that it's all a "Hamas conspiracy". (...) Severe hunger prevails in the Strip. Some findings already point to famine, the most extreme level of food deprivation. The evidence is clear, wide-ranging, unequivocal and cross-checked. It comes from multiple sources, from different parts of Gaza, from local and foreign sources, from data and images, from reports and video footage. In fact, it even comes from Israel itself, which announced a complete halt of food entry into the Strip for two and a half months, beginning in early March, and then reported the renewed delivery of a minimal amount for a few additional weeks (an average of 71 trucks a day to feed two million people). The main evidence of the severity of the situation comes from an extensive medical operation, focusing on measurement of the circumference of toddlers' upper arms. It's a simple test: Measuring tape is wrapped around the upper arm, and anyone whose arm has a circumference that is below the norm is classified as malnourished. According to UNICEF, these tests are currently being conducted at 289 locations around the Strip. In July alone, the arms of about 140,000 Gazan children under the age of 5, out of 320,000 toddlers and children living in Gaza, were measured. The results? Nearly 9 percent of the youngsters suffer from severe malnutrition, compared to 2 percent in February. Data collected by the UN paints the following picture: Tens of thousands of children under the age of 5 in the Strip are suffering today from acute malnutrition, with several thousand experiencing severe acute malnutrition. According to the most recent assessment, compiled at the end of last week, the rate of children suffering from severe acute malnutrition continues to rise. There is a host of additional evidence deriving from reports from the Ministry of Health in Gaza on the surge of deaths attributed to starvation, which numbered 227 this past Wednesday, including 103 children; high food prices in the markets; hospital records and accounts from desperate doctors; before-and-after photos shared by Gazans; testimony from foreign doctors volunteering in the Strip; and video clips and calls documenting the severity of the situation. The authors of this text have conducted a live video tour in a clinic for starving patients in Gaza and have thus witnessed the catastrophe firsthand. (...) According to Israeli pediatrician Dr. Michal Feldon, "We see many children with chronic illnesses in Israel, and not a single one of them looks this emaciated. If children arrive at hospitals in Israel looking like this, we suspect abuse or neglect – even in the case of chronic patients – and involve social services and the police." Anyone who has been following the reports from aid organizations has not been surprised by the worsening situation. From the moment a complete blockade on Gaza was announced and food entry was halted in March, reports of the emerging humanitarian crisis multiplied. The number of children suffering from severe malnutrition was rising. Even when Israel opened the border crossings, it allowed food in sparingly. And even when the amount of food increased, Israel insisted – and continues to insist – on not returning to the UN's food distribution program, which is based on numerous community kitchens and distribution of aid to families based on an organized system of registered recipients. The reality of burgeoning hunger in Gaza has now been recognized by almost the entire world. This week, 24 countries signed a declaration calling for urgent action to stop the starvation there. Among the signatories were France, the U.K., Japan, Sweden and Switzerland. Even the prime minister's last remaining supporter in the global arena, U.S. President Donald Trump, reportedly shouted at Netanyahu that he had seen clear evidence of starvation.
