Kanskje ikke helt tilfeldig at AMD kommer med dette nå. IDF starter 7. september og vil nok få mye oppmerksomhet i media. AMD tar dermed litt av oppmerksomheten vekk fra det Intel måtte komme med (på samme måte som Intel ville gjort overfor AMD).

 

Regner med vi får høre mer fra IDF og Intels dobbelkjerne planer fremover, Intel skal ihvertall ha en sesjon om "Dual Core Systems" på IDF, men inntil videre er det AMD som har fokus på seg og stjerne i boka for å være først.

Det er nok snakk om å kapre oppmerksomhet ja, men det er da vanlig. (selv om enkelte i en viss klubb later til å ikke vite det :whistle: )

 

Har hørt rykter om at Intel skal demonstrere en dual core CPU på IDF om en ukes tid, så dette er nok ikke mye tilfeldig og bare starten på en lengre ord krig:

 

Intel unfurled its proposed delivery dates for dual-core desktop chips in May, but AMD countered that it had been preparing to go dual-core for some time. (IBM already sells dual-core chips.) Partisans and companies on both sides of the issue will likely debate the issue furiously during the next year.

BTW Intel kommer nok til å demonstrere Montecito siden dete er den eneste de tidligere har vist wafere av.

AMD Demonstrates Dual Core Leadership

Another AMD First

• Today AMD reached another important milestone in leading the industry toward pervasive 64-bit computing by being the first in the industry to demonstrate an x86 dual core processor for 32- and 64-bit computing.

• AMD recently demonstrated a 4-socket HP ProLiant DL585 server powered by four dual core AMD Opteron™ processors manufactured on the 90nm SOI process.

– HP, IBM and Sun and other system manufacturers will be able to easily incorporate dual core products into their existing AMD Opteron™ processor-based designs

– End users can upgrade their existing systems that are compatible with 90nm single core processors to dual core processors

AMD Opteron™ Dual Core Overview

• The AMD Opteron™ processor was designed from the start to add a second core

– Port already existed on crossbar/SRI

– One die with 2 CPU cores, each core has its own 1MB L2 cache

Drops into existing AMD Opteron 940-pin sockets that are compatible with 90nm single core processors

A BIOS update was all that was necessary to get the 4-socket server up and running with dual core AMD Opteron processors

• The 2 CPU cores share the same memory and HyperTransport™ technology resources found in single core AMD Opteron processors

– Integrated memory controller & HyperTransport links route out the same as today’s implementation
