What is Roleplay, and how does one roleplay?

Or better: Where and how might I learn my ways?

It is something that concerns all of us seeking to immerse themselves in the World of Warcraft: "killerjohn" or "shootyouintheface" joining our servers, then asking what RP actually is, after which he proceeds to laugh in our faces because we’re such geeks.

I’m not writing this article to judge anyone. I’m sure killerjohn is the exact target audience for other servers, but not for ours. So hence why I’m writing: I wish to inform the community of what RP (roleplay) is, and how to properly engage in it.

Ok so you guys think you’re Orcs or something?

No we don’t! We act out the role of an Orc online, it’s something totally different. Thinking we’re Orcs would result in us coloring our skin green and talking in a somewhat distorted Yoda voice. However, none of us do that.

Uhm that explanation doesn’t work for me, sorry.

Very well, then let me explain further: Is Tom Hanks now under the impression that he can survive on his own on a deserted island (Cast away), or does Brad Pitt think he’s someone super gipsy boxer who can knock everyone out with one blow (Snatch)? No, they don’t they’re actors. They’re given a role (or pick one themselves), and act it out. We do the same thing.

Hmm, ok, but then how does this all work?

Easy. We think up a background story for the character we intend to play out, and then act after that, just as an actor would. When I roleplay, I’m not talking to the person controlling Groktosh the Orc warrior, I’m infact talking to Groktosh himself.

But Groktosh is not real?

Well, neither is Batman, however back in the days everyone seemed to love him, and Gotham City with it. Of course it’s not real, that’s why Warcraft is titled fantasy/fiction.

What is this OoC thing I keep hearing about?

OoC is short for Out of Character. It means saying or doing something that your character would not do. For example talking about levels, experience points, honor points, DPS etc. All out of character talk should be kept out of the say and yell channels. If it is absolutely necessary to say it in say or yell channel mark what you say with OOC first

And what about IC? Does it mean to stay in corpse, not to release my spirit or something?

No, IC has nothing to do with dying. IC is short for In Character and is the opposite of out of character. On roleplaying servers all talk in the say and yell channels should be in character talk. That means only what your character would say.

Someone called me a metagamer, what is that supposed to mean?

Metagaming is simply using knowledge your character does not have. For example if you know your way around in Gnomeregan, but your character has never been there before you are metagaming. There are various levels of metagaming. Most people don't like to play dumb and not find their way around. A less acceptable way of metagaming would be to wait for a respawn so that your enemy will run into monsters so that you can kill him more easily. All kinds of taking advantage of game mechanics are considered to be metagaming. Metagaming and out of character are closely related.

Someone keeps yelling at me, but they seem to be in character. Still, I don't feel good about it. Why don't they like me?

Don't take this personally. Someone might yell at you in character, but they are really friendly and helpful out of character. Many good roleplaying situations come from conflicts and you should just keep on playing and act as your character would do. After all, in a fantasy world, as well as in the real world, not everyone likes eachother.

It all sounds rather geeky to me.

Well, call it whatever you want. There’s a reason why there’s only so few RP servers: it’s most certainly not for everyone. The majority will enjoy a PvP server, or perhaps a more laidback gaming session at a PvE server. Few of the players on there take Wow as serious as we do, or at least not in the same manner.

How about the server ruleset?

We have two types of servers, currently.

RP PvE servers aswell as RP PvP servers. It should be clear which server uses which ruleset. There are two of each.

RP PvE servers are:

Argent Dawn

Earthen Ring

RP PvP servers are:

The Defias Brotherhood

The Venture Co.

So, say I would join. How would I go about creating a proper character?

You could start like this and answer these questions for yourself. then you could start making a character.

*(name of char, gender, age, maybe even looks)

*What has my char done in his/her life already?

*What does my char like/dislike?

*What kind of ideas about the world has my char?

*Background

*Does my char have any handicaps or quirks or maybe even hidden talents?

*What does my char want to accomplish in his/her life?

Of course, there are lots of other questions you may want to be asking yourself but that's totally up to you.

Ok so I joined an RP server, but it’s really minimal. I’m lvl 7 and I still haven’t RP’ed a single bit.

You’re still hanging around the starting areas (lvl 1-10), RP is really minimal here. This is where you will find the killerjohns who joined the wrong server and are still waiting to find that out. I’m hoping that this FAQ will make things abit clearer for people picking servers, so that they don’t have to start asking around at the starter areas. Probably the only characters you will find roleplaying around there are alt chars (alternate characters) of people who have been on the RP server for quite a while, and people who first joined an RP server and knew fully what it was they were getting into.

But what if I find that Roleplaying really isn't my thing after a few days or weeks? I'll have a character with a good couple of levels in, by then.

Blizzard has recently enabled character transfers for players on the Argent Dawn and Earthen Ring RP servers. Earthen Ring players are able to move their character to the Runetotem PvE server, and Argent Dawn players can move their character to the Draenor PvE server. These servers both use the same ruleset as AD and ER, except you're not expected to roleplay there.

UPDATE: - transfers have ended -

Ok, this is great! You convinced me. I’m joining. However I get this idiot going “thx =)" and such. That’s not RP’ing right? I think I’ll throw him on my ignore list.

First off, people aren’t idiots just for using shorthand and smilies. They just joined the wrong server. My personal approach is to just explain what’s going on to them. When they understand that they might decide to play along, or they leave the server altogether. Believe me, this approach is far better than just ignoring them. This will give people the impression that we’re all a bunch of elitist bastards, and that’s not good for the public opinion ;).

Thanks for answering my questions. I hope to see you soon on the battlefields of Azeroth!

I’m sure you will! See you later, and have fun RP’ing!

ok here we go, just a few more tips.

1:

For the record, you have been roleplaying all your life, ever since you where in ma's tummy and up to now. Every minute you roleplay yourself.

Roleplaying is essentially just making a person, give that person a identity, personality, background, history and everything else that goes with a person. Don't base the person on your build, base the build on your person. Character creation and what class and how you build that class around your character is very important for roleplaying.

2:

What do you do when you enter world of Warcraft?

Do you run straight to the quests? Seek friends? or what?

What most persons would do would be to wake up!

So wake up from a nap, sleep or whatever, take a shower or a cup of tea....anything a person would do when that person just woke up. Of course, you don't need to go very indept. The thing is, it adds to the roleplay and makes you enjoy it alot more.

3:

What do you do when you play?

You should show emotions, what you do and more.

Say your character scratches himself or sneezes.

(type "/e" without the "" and hit space and write message)

All this makes your person more living, making it easier to give him a personality and life. Making roleplaying much better.

Smiles, nod, sneeze, scratch, glare, punch, hug, kiss, laugh, poke, play cards, tell a story or whatever. Just imagine what a real person would do. In the beginning it will be a bit hard, but keep doing it and ye got it in the cycle.

4:

You CAN plan with friends to make several characters that know each others and so on. That makes Roleplaying more enjoyable.

5:

Names, a proper REAL name is very very important.

I have seen people being named: Dangerpowers and worse.

Pick a proper mame, use your imaginations or a list. Most races have names that fits their races, Night elfs having gracious, beautiful and songful names while orcs have more brutish names for example. And yes, one thing they ought to allow is space between two names.

And DON'T use people from books, movies, games or the real world. One: they are copyright so thats a nono, two: it ain't proper RP.

6:

Most players tend to run and run and run, never resting eating or the like. None can do that.

Do sit down, take a break. Find that old wine bought in stormwind and that piece of loaf bought in ironforge and enjoy them. Take in the view and rest like any person would do after a time of heavy work. Persons, even in Warcraft need to drink, rest, eat and sleep.

So take a little time to consider this.

7:

Sosializing, there are other ways to socialize than doing quests together. Go on fishing trips, or sightseeings. Go on a picnic with your girlfriend or race from point A to point B.

Get to know people, take a drink at the local tavern. Jump in the sea for a swim or bath.

Do things with people which a person would have done with his\her\it's friends or aquaintances.

Talk business, gambling, card dealing or whatever. Use your imagination!

Example: I took a friend to ironforge and walked from Menethil, we used good two hours on it, talking, laughing, enjoying the view and so on. Doing great Roleplaying and enjoying it greatly.

8:

People, use your imagination, if you use these seven simple tips i've written you are on a good way already. Also if you are interested, read fantasy books like the Forgotten Realms or the Warcraft books to get to know the fantasy realms better.

But my point is: use your imagination and have fun.

9:

These are only GUIDELINES and does NOT have to be followed, i simply wrote them to help people get a better idea on how to Roleplay.

Yes it might seem like taking forever to do all this, but trust me, its more enjoyable and in the long run you'll work it in as rutine and don't mind the time spent at all! :)

I have RP'd at a pure social server in Neverwinter Nights for 6 months (not long i know) so i'm kinda used to heavy roleplay.

Just remember, even if you just add a tiny bit in all area's it'll make excellent roleplay.

Ok im talking to much, point is: these are just guidelines and does not mean you have to follow them if you don't want to.

10:

A great thanks to Leon Nighshade from the neverwinter nights server siflige for writing the first work on the siflige stream.

11:

If you feel you cannot do this, i courage you to give it a try, i RP almost daily with a girl that have never roleplayed before, nor read any of this. Yet she role play very well, following these guidelines to an extent (though she doesn't know it). So don't loose courage and give it a try!
