Thanks :)

Finally got it!!

If I use S-ata drives, will there be enough connections?

Otherwise I am ready for shooooppppping:)

If im not mistaken, that board has got 4 s-ata ports controlled by the ICH6R Southbridge. Frankly, i think you could've figured that one out yourself.

Ehm:

My pc skills are lower than you could expect.

Er ikke helt sikkert han kunne funnet det ut selv.

yep, soutbridge is closer to some place in south of France to me :)

Thanks anyway, also finalised list of shops. Most will come from pcutstyr, then some from microplex and some from psdata. Can't wait.

Thanks anyone for input, I am sure this is going to be good experience for me and good machine that will last.

The thing is that I don't know how to connect more than 2 hard drives. Possibility to connect (including all necessary cables) differs from opportunity to conect when you buy additional PCI card or what not. Mu current PC has one cable with master and slave. So if I want to add one more HD I would not be able. Unless I would be additional card that would enable that. So this is as much I understand about it. I have read spec and saw it takes more hard drives. But I was not clrear if that was a possibility (plug and play) or opportunity (if you buy additional card.

I fully agree with you, man should firs search the net. Not that it is most efficient way, but because you widen your understanding. If you compare what I understand know and what it was 3 weeks earlier, there is a huge difference. I am almost proud of myself :)

But I do not agree that this has nothing to do with PC skills. You can give twice as much of reading to some of the people, they would still not know where to start...

In any case, I think I have been reading a lot (and I do not regret that) and I also received a lot of help from this forum. PC changed 60 % from my initial set up. So I feel very thankfull for all people that responded, suggested valuable changes.

So long!

The fact that you individually understand the win in solving your questions by reading yourself, rather then simply asking, proves that you've got the point I was trying to make. Good luck with your new setup, it should work perfectly for your need. And remember, dont hesitate to ask, we'll help you gladly!

Cut-out on your motherboard from Komplett:

ATA-100 - kontakt(er): 1 x 40-pin IDC

Serial ATA-150 - kontakt(er): 4 x 7-pin seriell ATA

ATA-133 - kontakt(er): 2 x 40pin IDC

As shown, you can connect up to 6 (Paralell) ATA-drives (hard drives, CD/DVD, etc.) and 4 S-ATA drives (normally only hard drives, though there are some DVD recorders that use S-ATA).

You shouldn´t worry about the difference between ATA-100 and ATA-133, ´cause you won´t notice any difference.

Your DVD and hard drive configuraiton seems wise, but make sure that Seagate drive is S-ATA. No need for an standard (Paralell) ATA drive in these days, I think.

Btw, on S-ATA, there are only one device on each cable. Therefore, no Master/Slave issues, unless you mix P-ATA and S-ATA drives in you PC. Simply connect your Raptor to S-ATA_1 on your motherboard, and your Seagate (S-ATA!) on S-ATA_2, and it should work smooth. Then you are free to add two more S-ATA drives later, which should be enough for most people. Your NEC can connect as Master on IDE_1 on your motherboard, and everything should work out fine.

You can drop that 20-24 ATX adapter if you choose Mist, as I think you should ;)

Regarding case fans, it could be smart to ensure a bit more air flow than PSU only. Depending on which case you select, fans could be included, but normally those are more noisy ones. Papst makes good and silent fans.

Up to 19dB on per example Papst shouldn´t be too noisy, but this varies from person to person.

Some might suggest SilenX fans, which propably are a bit better, but more expensive and difficult to get.

Thanks again. Mist is on my list, 20-24 adapter is out, smile is back on my face :)

Seagates will be SATA. Will follow you recommendations for connection.

O plan to use another DVD recorder (in addition) that I have from before. Where would you recommend to add that one?

You do have a NEC ND-3520 in your handlevogn, don´t you? I couldn´ understand you question correctly, but with one NEC ND-3520, there should be no need for another optical device, as it outfills every function you normally need for CD/DVD recording. As for me, my next DVD recorder will be a S-ATA one. Not for the speed (there are no difference in speed) or anything, I just hate those broad IDE (P-ATA) cables.

It is prefered to use one seperate IDE cable for each DVD drive especially if your going to make cd to cd copies. And make sure the IDE cable you use are the ATA 133 ones, because the old ATA 33 cables are now too slow for DVD burning.

If your up to it, you can dive into all of that too by searching on "Oc-Freak" words on this forum, who knows a lot, but I`ve got the impression that you have done enough reading ;)

Godd luck!

Just for the record, if you're in need of copying a cd/dvd to another disc, this can be done quite easily without two individual optical drives (a reader and a burner). As Playmofetish explains, the chosen nec burner is quite capable of both reading and burning, although these two operations can't be done simultainously, it is possible to copy a disc by saving a stored image of the source-disc on your HD, and THEN burning it. Are you aware of this? In case your not, this pretty much saves you the money you're using on your second drive.

  • 2 uker senere...

Finally bought all the parts of my PC. Have one question though... I put Zalman CNPS7700 cooler on CPU on ASUS P5AD2-E Premium , then I try to insert it into Silverstone TJ06 case, but it does not fit... Zalman touches the side of the case and bends a lot. I would need to use really power to bend it even more if I want to srew motherboard in place. What should I do?

I could also send a picture if I didn't explain clearly enough on what I meant above. Just PM an email address where to. Help is appreciated as the project is on hold right now, all parts are on my bed and my wife will kill me if we need to sleep in another room :(
