As you can see, Silent Store only affects the drive's seek performance. In all three modes, the burst transfer rate was not affected at all.

On the other hand, the seek speed was greatly influenced by the Silent Store mode. According to Maxtor when the Silent Store mode is set to Quiet, Silent Store reduces the hard disk seek performance by approximately 8%.

However, the benchmarks show that the performance deterioration can be as great as 35.2%! In fact, the average performance deterioration from the independent benchmark results of three different hard disks came to be about 18.5%. That's a lot more than Maxtor admitted.

Such a drop in seek performance is completely unacceptable. After all, we buy DiamondMax drives for their high performance. What's the point in paying so much for high-end drive when it ends up being crippled to reduce the noise level?



Performance Vs. Acoustics

Theoretically, the Silent Store's Off mode is faster than the Fast mode. This is because with Silent Store turned off, no acoustic management is performed and the drive performs normally. The Fast mode reduces seek performance just a little in order to lower the noise level. However, the benchmarks showed that the performance difference between the Silent Store (or Acoustic Management) modes of Fast and Off is, for practical purposes, non-existent.

Personally, I don't really feel there's much difference between the Fast and Off modes. But if you perceive a significant difference in the noise level, it might be worth it to set the Silent Store mode to Fast. But if you can't really make out the difference, it's best to turn Silent Store off to guarantee maximum seek performance.

As for the Quiet mode, I don't think it should be considered by anyone as the performance drop is considerable. Unless, of course, you need a really quiet drive.

So, I'm pretty sure that you will want to change Maxtor's default Silent Store mode to a faster mode or just disable Silent Store. How do we go about that?
