The superjumbo, registration VH-OQI, flew from Dresden, Germany, to Victorville on Monday.

From there, it travelled to the Mojave Desert, where it will be stored along with the rest of Qantas' fleet of 12 A380s until demand for international travel returns.

Qantas captain Richard de Crespigny, best known for safely landing an A380 when its engine exploded, has revealed COVID has forced him into early retirement.

He said he took the decision to end his 45-year career after being “stood down and in limbo” since March following the airline’s decision to stop flying internationally and store its A380s in the Victorville desert boneyard.

Singapore Airlines became the very first carrier to retire the Airbus A380. In total, five of its 24 Airbus A380 aircraft have so far left the fleet. These are the aircraft registered 9V-SKA through 9V-SKE. At least two of these aircraft have been scrapped by TARMAC Aerosave in Tarbes.
