The Pentium ! micro-architecture is based on a RISC core with 5 units, and a xx-stages pipeline. The Pentium M core uses very close features, but its clock speed tends to prove that it uses a deeper pipeline. In fact, the Pentium M is today available up to 1,6GHz, and this clock speed is definitely out of the range of the current Pentium ! core, as the fastest 0,13µ available model uses a 1,4GHz frequency. A deeper pipeline, with more than xx stages, could explain that the 0,13µ manufactured Pentium M is able to reach 1,6GHz ; the Pentium 4 shows that a deep pipeline allows to reach very high clock frequencies (the Pentium 4 pipeline is 20-stages deep, and reaches 3,06GHz with a 0,13µ process).

Intel tends to confirm that the Pentium M uses a deeper pipeline, but don't reveal the real value.
