I think Canon is trying to bring some order and control back to it's product line, remeber the MkII was a real surprise to them. When it was released they thought they'd have a nice, high res (at the time) mid-range prosumer body with a cute video mode for the AP.
Then every indie filmaker with a few grand saw it as the next DVX100 with shallow DOF!
No Japanese heavy industrial Co. Likes to be suprised like that, even in a good way. They like to plan out they're releases and match features as much as possible across brands (Yes, Nikon, Canon ans Sony are in cahoots, it's not ani-trust in Japan, it's tradition).
I heard a story that when Canon relesed the 4:2:2 codec in the XF cams at NAB a few years ago they didn't tell Sony in time for them to announce a comparable upgrade. When the Sony team heard about it they pulled every Canon lens from the Sony 2/3" cameras and dropped them off at thier booth in protest.
I don't know if they're just banking on all the people who invested heavily in Canon systems for the MkII just upgrading on pricipal but it's all cyclical. I'm just excited to get my D800 in 3 weeks and print some 4' wide panoramas
BTW for others thinking of a new DSLR for astro/timelapse, the D800 & D4 not only have built in intervolometers but can actually make QT movies from them in camera. And at least with the D800 having almost 8K resolution means the ability to pan, zoom, stabilize etc. considerably while maintainng a full 4K frame.
